December 30, 2011: Meanwhile, Elsewhere On e23 . . .

Steve Jackson Games - Fri, 12/30/2011 - 08:06

Federation Commander Reference RulebookGURPS Prime Directive

I spend my days helping to make sure the wheels run smoothly on e23. Although we have an amazing selection of Steve Jackson Games releases on our dazzling digital domain, we also offer lots of interesting PDFs from other publishers. The end of the year is a good time to look over their high-rated releases (which usually translates to "what should I -- Steven Marsh -- check out because it looks so cool?").

Amarillo Design Bureau makes detailed tactical games, but with those details come lots of rules and options to keep track of. So it's no surprise that fans are delighted to have compiled versions of the rulebooks available as searchable PDFs. The Federation Commander Reference Rulebook is a huge hit, as is Star Fleet Battles: Electronic Master Rulebook (which actually came out in December of last year, and sold enough this year to keep it a top-seller).

Fans of GURPS also bought lots of copies of their licensed Fourth Edition supplements, including GURPS Prime Directive, GURPS Federation, and GURPS Klingons. There's a lot of futuristic fun in these supplements, and I won't be surprised if I spend part of my holiday looking for adventure among the stars.

Unknown Armies 2nd Edition

Hamlet's Hit Points

Atlas Games has also released a gaggle of goodies that got my gaming juices flowing. As an RPG omnivore, my tastes drifted toward a slew of classic and award-winning RPG core rulebooks that were uploaded to e23 this year, including Feng Shui: Action Movie Roleplaying (pistol-packing kung-fu hijinks), Unknown Armies 2nd Edition (modern occult intrigue), and Over the Edge Second Edition (which has the subtitle The Roleplaying Game of Surreal Danger . . . and I can't top that). Of particular note is the Ars Magica 5th Edition Core Rulebook; it was just uploaded a few weeks ago, but it's already conjured a lot of buzz (unsurprising, given how popular the rest of the Ars Magica line is).

At e23 we also feature non-system material, of use to any gamer, which is why Hamlet's Hit Points -- and the gamerly analytical insight it brings to three classic tales -- has found such an appreciative audience. A bunch of Traveller fans also picked up the 40-Ton Slow Pinnace by the inimitable Loren K. Wiseman (editor of our own Journal of the Travellers' Aid Society). Finally, the old-school geek in me was delighted that we uploaded Grimtooth's Traps, a classic systemless supplement that's been maiming heroes for decades.

The electronic publishing revolution has made it easier and more affordable than ever for gamers to expand their horizons, and e23 has been proud to help make that happen. The future is now . . . and it's a lot of fun!

We’ve a new adventure module or two dropping soon, as part of our donation rewards, as well as the Dharma 6 setting coming soon. In honor of the desperate efforts of my friends to chain me, weeping, to a typewriter, we’re extending the pay-what-you-want period by one week.

Just to clarify, after that, we’ll still be donating all proceeds to Child’s Play, we’ll just be using a slightly more conventional distribution method. We’ll do everything we can to keep you guys in the loop, and any comments or questions will be answered as fast as possible.

#1 With a Bullet Point: 7 Time Thief/Time Warden Feats

RPGNow - Fri, 12/30/2011 - 00:55
#1 With a Bullet Point: 7 Time Thief/Time Warden FeatsPublisher: Super Genius Games

Sometimes rules supplements read like the world-setting bible of frustrated novelists. While solid world-building is a useful skill, you don’t always need four paragraphs of flavor text to tell you swords are cool, magic is power, shadows are scary, and orcs are savage. Sometimes a GM doesn’t have time to slog through a page of history for every magic weapon. Sometimes all that’s needed are a few cool ideas, with just enough information to use them in a game. Sometimes, all you need are bullet points.

#1 With A Bullet Point is a line of very short, cheap PDFs each of which gives the bare bones of a set of related options. It may be five spells, six feats, eight magic weapon special abilities, or any other short set of related rules we can cram into about a page. Short and simple, these PDFs are for GMs and players who know how to integrate new ideas into their campaigns without any hand-holding, and just need fresh ideas and the rules to support them. No in-character fiction setting the game world. No charts and tables. No sidebars of explanations and optional rules. Just one sentence of explanation for the High Concept of the PDF, then bullet points.

The High Concept: Seven feats designed to augment the options and utility of time thieves and time wardens (from The Genius Guide to the Time Thief and The Genius Guide to the Time Warden).

The feats included are:

  • Aevum Mastery
  • Alternate Self
  • Last-Second Save
  • Mote Mastery
  • Opportune Blow
  • Precognition
  • Timely Detonation

RPGnet - Fri, 12/30/2011 - 00:00

RPGnet - Fri, 12/30/2011 - 00:00
Capsule Review by Shane O'Connor (5/5): The beginning of a campaign meant for evil characters. While it is something of a railroad, this is still an incredibly fun and well-crafted adventure wherein you're criminals taking revenge on the forces of goodness.

Palladium Books® Weekly Update – Dec. 29, 2011

Palladium Books - Thu, 12/29/2011 - 21:20

My personal and professional goal remains to get Palladium in a position to release one or two new books every month. I know, I talk like that every year, but this year I really think we have things in place to pull it off. If we do finally succeed in pulling off one or two new releases month after month, we will need YOUR support by purchasing them and spreading the word to encourage others to try our games and supplements. The last two years, we have seen a lot of new gamers join the Palladium family. With your help we can continue to grow that audience and bring Palladium back to its former days of glory. Wouldn’t that be nice? I say let’s do it!

I was feeling a bit blue earlier this week. I think it was brought on by the disappointment of the post-Christmas drop in sales (frustrating) and missing the people I’ve lost in recent years, most notably my Dad, Erick Wujcik, and Mrs. Bartold just a few weeks ago. I’ve also been worrying about my dear, sweet friend, Kathryn Kozora and her battle with cancer, Madman Mike in the aftermath of his bone-breaking car crash, and a few other friends struggling with health or financial issues. Makes me angry to see these good, kind people struggling or suffering. With any luck, 2012 will be a happy, healthy and prosperous year for us all.

I couldn’t stay blue for too long, though. Not with the deluge of telephone calls, text messages and emails from a great number of friends and loved ones the last few days. Besides, I’m excited about the new year and brimming with ideas about, well, everything.

On a personal note, I got big news on Christmas Day: I’m going to become a Grandpa in 2012! My daughter Monica is pregnant with her first child. They don’t know if it’s a boy or girl (they want it to be a surprise, which I think is cool) and both Monica and her husband Steven are overjoyed. When I got the news Christmas morning we were all laughing and squealing like idiots. Wow. Congratulations Monica and Steven! Thanks for waiting and making the good news part of Christmas. :D

My thanks to the many friends and fans for your warm holiday wishes. I trust everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend.

More Murmurs from the Megaverse® and posts on Palladium’s Facebook Page. Both have been seeing increased activity as I’ve gotten back into posting more frequently at both web locations as well as interacting more on Facebook. I will continue to do so into the new year.

Online Video Programs for Palladium Books® are coming in 2012.

It looks like we’ll have some new video offerings online soon.

I plan to do some online video chats, interviews and presentations to post online starting next year. You know, short, fun stuff maybe 5-10 minutes long every week or two. Haven’t decided what to call it yet. Conversations with Kevin Siembieda or Kevin on Gaming, or . . . heck if I know. I’m open to suggestions. I’ll keep you posted on that front.

Carmen Bellaire is also planning on starting his video review show of Palladium products called From the Rifts®. He expects the first several reviews to be posted on YouTube sometime in January, 2012. I know he’s done 6-8 videos already, but has to edit them.

2012: Plans for new product. I’ll go into our plans for 2012 and start talking about the 2012 Palladium Open House (coming up FAST) in the next Weekly Update.

UPDATE: Online Sales. Though we didn’t break a record with last week’s sales, we came close to tying one. I was delighted with sales up through Christmas Day, then they plummeted. And I mean dropped like a rock. Yeesh. Talk about soul crushing.

All I can figure is people were out taking advantage of “After Christmas Sales” at retail stores and having too much holiday fun to be ordering Palladium products. Still, the precipitous drop was startling and worrisome. We saw sales rebound Wednesday night, but they were sluggish again last night. If sales follow the trend of previous years we should see sales shoot back up this weekend and through the next couple of weeks. The extension of the Christmas Surprise Package offer (you only have a couple weeks to still get one) should help on that front. I sure hope so as I was rather hoping for strong sales to rocket us into the New Year. I’d love to start the New Year off strong and kick it into high gear as we approach the 2012 Palladium Open House (May 3 VIP Night, 4, 5 & 6).

Palladium’s Christmas Surprise Package is the best deal of the holidays and it has been extended for about two weeks. $80-$90 (sometimes more) worth of Palladium Books product for only $38 plus shipping and handling. What are you waiting for?

BIG SALE on Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles Store. Speaking of sales, just about everything in my online store is selling at a 30% discount! That includes the toys and Palladium collectibles. Plus, I think I’ll have Alex and I put a couple dozen new “Palladium” items (books, proofreader copies of books, original artwork, prints, and other rare stuff) into the store in a day or two and maybe more next week. Alex has already added a bunch of new toys. All items are from my personal collection and are generally in very good to mint condition. The store’s current sale started yesterday and ends January 9, 2012. Check it out.

UPDATE: Rifts® Path of the Storm™ remains the Number One requested specific product for Surprise Packages in the month of December. The Palladium Bookmarks, Set One is the other hot new release, along with Robotech® The New Generation™ Sourcebook. As you might expect, Rifts®  is the most requested product line, but we are also seeing a lot of interest in Dead Reign™ (zombies), Heroes Unlimited™, Palladium Fantasy RPG® and Nightbane® as well as Chaos Earth™.

UPDATE: Rifts® Lemuria. Work on the writing and editing has been slow the last several weeks with the holidays and Grab Bags, but it is now my top priority! I worked on it a little yesterday and quite a bit today. Will continue to do so until it goes to the printer. This is a January release and you are going to love it.

UPDATE: The Rifter #57. Most of the artwork has been assigned and the book is being edited right now. It is another great issue with a bunch of monsters and strange animals for Palladium Fantasy® and tech stuff for Rifts® among other things. See the description elsewhere in this Update. January release.

UPDATE: Dead Reign™ Sourcebook 3: Endless Dead™. I finish this frightening addition to the Dead Reign™ RPG series next. The 96 page sourcebook presents zombies like you have never seen them, 7 new types of them, 5 new survivor O.C.C.s including the Wheelman and Zombie Hunter, vehicle armor rules, many encounter tables, adventure tables, what the military is doing and more. A February release.

UPDATE: Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook. I’ll be diving into this book right after Endless Dead. Looking at a February release.

UPDATE: Robotech® Genesis Pits. I spoke with Irvin Jackson last week and he’s working away on the manuscript with an eye to see this baby out no later than March.

UPDATE: Rifts® Northern Gun™. Matthew Clements has been writing away on the two Northern Gun books and he has more surprises in development. I want both Northern Gun™ books out before the Open House.

UPDATE: Other Titles. Like I mentioned earlier, I’m going to save the info on the rest of our line up for 2012 till next year. ;) But it includes Megaverse® in Flames, Beyond the Supernatural™, Palladium Fantasy™, Chaos Earth™ and other good stuff. I plan to make 2012 a year Palladium fans will never forget!

Happy New Year’s. Have fun, relax, buy a Palladium Surprise Package, be safe and have a wonderful New Year’s holiday. May the new year be a happy, healthy and prosperous one for us all.

– Kevin Siembieda, Publisher, Writer and Game Designer

Palladium to hold the line on price

I just want to reiterate that we have no intention of raising the cover price on most of our other books. However, we may increase the price of some core rule books, such as the Dead Reign™ RPG, Palladium Fantasy RPG®, Heroes Unlimited™, and others by a couple dollars as they go into new printings. In this tough economy, we want to continue to keep our prices low and the entry level for Palladium’s games the most affordable on the market. Spread the word.

 Path of the Storm

NEW! Rifts® Path of the Storm™ – One writer’s vision for the Rifts® movie – Available Now

Everyone wants to know what’s going on with the Rifts® movie. Well, this book presents an insight and behind the scenes info on that front by Kevin Siembieda, plus an entire screenplay written on speculation by Matthew Clements as well as game stats and artwork for major characters in the script. Kevin was so impressed with the writer’s screenplay that he had Matthew make changes and improvements and sent the second draft to Jerry Bruckheimer Films for their consideration. Meanwhile, Matthew and Kevin hit it off and the next thing he knew he became Palladium’s new staff writer.

This includes alien people and explorers, to mythical beings like dragons and Faeries, to dinosaurs, demons, ancient gods and unimaginable monstrosities. Those adventurers with the knowledge or the right connections can also travel through the Rifts to other places on Earth in the blink of an eye, as well as to an array of alien worlds and dimensions

We thought it would be fun to let Rifts® gamers and Palladium fans see the type of Rifts® movie we at Palladium Books would like to see made. So we are presenting Matthew’s screenplay as a proposed Rifts® movie script and Rifts® sourcebook. The screenplay is a fast, fun adventure story that is sure to please Rifts fans. To make it more fun, the author has statted out the key characters in the script and gamers can use the heroes, villains and story ideas in their own campaign should they choose to do so.

Ghosts Who Live Where Loyalty Lies

Fantasy Flight Games - Thu, 12/29/2011 - 19:57
An A Game of Thrones spotlight by guest writer Matt Ley

To begin, let us all think WAY back to 2006: There were 500 million less people in the world. Crash won best picture. My Seattle Seahawks made me proud by making the Super Bowl. Miami defeated Dallas in the NBA Championship, rather than the other way around. Italy defeated France in the World Cup in a shootout (although mentioning as much is a 100% kiss-up to our Euro friends since, well, it is soccer)… And I was lucky enough to win the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game World Championship that year, back when Joust was the “Only Game that Matters” and only one card was made per year.

Humblebrags, Brotherhood, and the Ghost of High Heart

I won’t bore you with details, but those were easily the most surprising set of wins of my A Game of Thrones career. I had never given a thought about to kind of card I’d make before I beat my friend and past champ Greg Dobbler (Dobbler) in the finals. (And, yes, please excuse my huge “humblebrag.”) After the win, many of the players retreated to the now-defunct Alcatraz restaurant for libations and good times. We sat outside with our drinks, and everyone helped me create a card that is now going to be released in the Chapter Pack, Where Loyalty Lies.

When working on the card, I knew it had to fulfill three requirements:

  • It had to be Brotherhood. This was in a time, before the Brotherhood Without Banners cycle, where the Brotherhood were bit players in the game. Beric, Anguy, Lem, and others were around, but they were certainly not a developed sub-faction. Regardless, I always played with them because I loved them in the books.
  • It had to have an effect close to that of the event, Confession (Kings of the Sea, 39). Basically, the card needed to look at someone’s hand, and get rid of their best card.
  • And… just to be a jerk, it had to be immune to the plot designed by good friend and champ, John Bruno (Mathlete), who won the year before. He designed the bane of low-cost chumps, The First Snow of Winter (On Dangerous Grounds, 59).

Over drinks that night, we brainstormed about who could have this ability. I remembered a very short portion of the books where the Brotherhood and Arya Stark visit an old Crone who looks into the future for the group and the young Stark. She was perfect! Shortly afterward, I submitted my idea for the Ghost of High Heart (Where Loyalty Lies, 77).

After quite a bit of back and forth with design, we came to a good point. The Ghost of High Heart became a two-cost, one-strength character who could not be discarded (because, at that point, First Snow was a discard instead of a return to hand effect, and as bonus, she was also immune to Threat from the North). She knelt to look at your opponent’s hand and discard a card of your choice, although your opponent could then draw. She had the Learned crest and, lastly, she gave Brotherhood characters an additional point of strength while she was standing. She was certainly strong, but certainly not an auto-include, and she didn’t provide literal card advantage unless your opponent consistently hit the draw cap.

The Ghost of champions past

Fast-forward to 2011. I was approached by the design team when they told me they wanted to revisit past Champion cards, albeit with some tweaks. I was excited.

The Ghost, as I had originally designed it, was overpowered in the present environment and didn’t fit with the current Brotherhood theme, so it was off to another round of back-and-forth with the design team! Overall, the final card turned out to a good match between my original version, and the present environment:

  • She kept the overall theme of the card, less her immunity to The First Snow of Winter!
  • She is Brotherhood, although now with the negative Ally trait.
  • The bonus she grants to strength is now triggered when you have no power on your house, standard Brotherhood wording.
  • She has her intrigue icon and the Learned crest for Outwit (The Isle of Ravens, 80).
  • Most importantly, she has the ability, like Confession, to glean a little intelligence on your opponent’s hand, and mess with his plans.

Yes, your opponent gets to draw a card (assuming he has not hit his draw cap), but chances are it won’t be as good a card. Also, you can use her against yourself to cycle unwanted cards into your discard pile (or cards that might interact with your discard pile) for the chance at something better.

I hope you enjoy the card as much as I will! As a Lannister and Martell player, it excites me that the card will be used for all sorts of backstabbing in the near future.

P.S. She combines well with a strong Night's Watch character in the set, which can make it easier to get your opponent to the draw cap for a more profitable use of the Ghost of High Heart!

Editor’s Note: We’ll take a look at the second half of this combination next week in an article by guest writer Joe Becker.

Shadows Over Texas: Three Pulp Fiction Horror Classics

RPGNow - Thu, 12/29/2011 - 19:35
Three Pulp Fiction Horror ClassicsPublisher: NUELOW Games

His fear-glazed eyes took in the tall, vulture-like form—the icy eyes, the long black
fingernails—the moldering garb, hideously ancient—the long spurred boot—the slouch hat with its crumbling feather--the flowing cloak that was falling to shreds. Framed in the black doorway crouched that abhorrent shape out of the past....

Legendary fantasy and horror writer Robert E. Howard (1906 - 1936) penned many ground-breaking and genre-shaping short stories during his too-short lifetime and career. His true desire, however, was to be write historical fiction in general and to write stories about the people and places in the Great American Southwest where he lived.

The three stories in Shadows Over Texas: Three Pulp Fiction Horror Classics Set in the Lone Star State hail from the dark place where Howard's gifts for writing bone-chilling horror and bone-crunching action crossed paths with his dreams of being a writer of regional fiction. They are tales with a uniquely Southwestern flair with action so frenetic and horror so black that they may be counted among the he ever wrote.

Shadows Over Texas contains "The Horror from the Mound," "The Man on the Ground," "Black Wind Blowing," and a preface from editor Steve Miller. It is presented in PDF format, which is ideal for reading on iPads and the iPod Touch.
