May 19, 2018: Dungeon Fantasy In The Classroom

Steve Jackson Games - Sat, 05/19/2018 - 13:20
Thursday morning, in my middle-school classroom, a student shouted gleefully, "My spell just put the whole town to sleep!" At another table, a boy examined his character sheet and asked, "If I get Signature Gear for my backpack, does that mean all my stuff is invulnerable?" Nearby, a girl confided, "Instead of being a Cat-Folk, I've decided that I'm a human who can turn into a leopard!"

Dungeon Fantasy RPGG

This is not some experiment in gamifying social studies. It's part of a weekly program at my school where teachers sponsor a variety of activities intended to appeal to student interests beyond core academics. This spring, a colleague and I have had the privilege of introducing 20 middle schoolers to the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game

But they were doing it all wrong.

In preparation for the activity, we purchased a few box sets, GM screens, and extra dice at a local game shop. We capped the activity at 20 students, divided into four tables of five — one GM and four players. We selected a set of pregenerated characters from the Delvers to Go book in the Dungeon Fantasy GM Screen and various characters posted to the DFRPG forum. For simplicity's sake, we limited roles to warriors (mostly knights and barbarians), clerics, wizards, and thieves, recommending that groups select one character from each role. We modified a few characters to keep things appropriate for middle school (e.g., no lechery) and ensured that there was a diverse array to choose from.

At our first 45-minute session, I gave a short presentation on the basics of roleplaying games and the 3d6 mechanic in DFRPG. Students formed groups and chose a GM. As students chose characters, we looked over character sheets together, made adjustments, and discussed the significance of key abilities. Disadvantages and quirks were popular topics, with most students immediately appreciating the value of a clever quirk.

I planned to run an interactive tutorial on combat at our second session, but the students were raring to go. No more tutorials . . . they wanted to game. Two of the four GMs already had their own adventure ideas; the other two used I Smell a Rat. My teaching colleague and I simply made ourselves available to answer questions as they came up.

Rules fidelity was loose. Very loose. Remembering my own early days of gaming (where we misunderstood half the rules and made up the other half) helped me to swallow my affront at the beautiful system being shredded around me. Rarely have I seen 20 students more excited about an endeavor at school. So I shrugged, grinning at the proposition of a Backpack of Invulnerability, giving a thumbs-up to the Were-leopard of Doom, and replying to the intrepid archmage, "The whole town?!? Amazing!"

They were doing it exactly right. — Andrew Roy, Saint Paul, Minnesota

What Has He Got in His Pockets? 100 Detailed Fantasy Oddities

RPGNow - Sat, 05/19/2018 - 12:31
What Has He Got in His Pockets? 100 Detailed Fantasy OdditiesPublisher: Azukail Games

Defeated enemies have pockets - as well as pouches, backpacks, crates, barrels, sacks and treasure hoards. Most of the items found in these will be treasure, or items of value. Some may simply be pieces of junk. But what about those which are not exactly either?

This is a collection of 100 different things that can be - sparingly, otherwise they are not odd - placed into the loot. They are items which may have no or minimal value, or which do not specifically appear to have use, but which have something odd about them, perhaps making players think.

They can be used as red herrings designed to make players spend time trying to determine the importance of something that has none, or perhaps as adventure hooks, leading characters elsewhere.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here is a sample result:

A small drawstring red leather pouch. Inside the pouch are seven irregularly-shaped pebbles. The pebbles look ordinary, except for the fact that they are all of an identical size, shape, colour and weight.

Call That a Knife?

RPGNow - Sat, 05/19/2018 - 12:23
Call That a Knife?Publisher: Azukail Games

Call That a Knife? sees a strange woman pulled out of the sea at a port. The woman is wearing tight-fitting armour and has unusual weapons, which she immediately attacks her rescuers with, killing several. The characters hear about this attack and may pursue the woman, who is travelling across the town's roofs, as she tries to escape. The woman speaks no known language; it isn't known who or what she is or why she is attacking everyone who approaches her

This is aimed at d100 systems but is generic enough in nature to be adapted to others.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Let the Force Be Your Guide

Fantasy Flight Games - Sat, 05/19/2018 - 01:20
Published 18 May 2018 | Star Wars: Force and Destiny Let the Force Be Your Guide

Unlimited Power Brings New Adventure to the Tabletop

“The Force is in all things. In me, in you, in all of us—and in the spaces in between, as well.”
   –Neeza Arrell, Rebel Operative

The galaxy is filled with people who believe hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, but the Mystic knows better. They can feel the power that lies beneath the surface of every planet, every star, every object in the galaxy.  They understand the greatest weapon ever built is no match for the power of the Force. Unlimited Power is the next sourcebook for the Star Wars™: Force and Destiny™ roleplaying game, and it can significantly expand on the role of the Mystic in your campaign. In addition to three new Mystic specializations, Unlimited Power includes new species, new equipment and weapons, and instructions for how to best integrate a Mystic character or NPC into an adventure.

Unlimited Power also features the tools a Game Master can use to highlight the talents of a Mystic character searching for direction or how to introduce a new Mystic into an existing campaign. The Living Force, crafting via alchemy, and the perils of falling to the dark side are discussed in depth so your player characters can live up to their full potential and discover the truly unlimited power that flows through them when they become an ally to the Force.

Today's preview of Unlimited Power will focus on how you can even more closely tie your campaign to the Force and help Mystic characters to attain their destiny, whichever side of the Force it may be on...

You can pre-order your copy of Unlimited Power at your local retailer or online through our website today!

The Living Force in Your Campaign

While Mystics are not alone in their attunement to the will of the Force, Mystic characters may benefit from a more prominent use of the Force as a narrative element than, say, a Guardian. Mystics are characters who most frequently employ the Force in mysterious ways, and will often take the foreground when the campaign features such elements. Unlimited Power details how to incorporate visions, the will of the Force, and the concept of the Force as "magic" into your campaign.

Visions are one of the most common ways for the Force to play a narrative role in a campaign. Much like Luke Skywalker's vision of his friends in danger on Cloud City, the visions a character receives may not always be true—they may not ever come to pass—but they can spur a Mystic to action. A vision can fill the downtime between adventures and kick off a new story arc, but it is wise to know where that vision is headed and to keep the will of the Force consistent throughout the campaign by treating the Force almost as a character with recurring themes and goals.

Add the visions to the many ways a Mystic makes use of their connections to the Force, and it can seem as though the Force is an almost magical element. Cultures and individuals raised with a certain understanding of what the Force is—an understanding often rooted in Jedi beliefs—might find a Magus character strange, or even terrifying. The use of obviously supernatural abilities can have an effect on the campaign's narrative as well, making it clear that there is more to the Force than simply the Jedi and the Sith.

Alchemy Crafting

Alchemy is the process of imbuing elixirs, potions, and items with seemingly arcane power. To the uninitiated, this may appear to be a kind of magic, but it is no different than a Jedi constructing his or her lightsaber. Alchemical creations are rarely so grand as the famed Jedi weapon, however, with items ranging from simple potions and trinkets to powerful talismans.

In addition to salves and potions, the trained alchemist is capable of concocting poisons as well as fetishes built to inspire fear. Although the Mystic Alchemist may know a thing or two about crafting, much of the alchemical knowledge of the galaxy has existed in secret, ignored by the Jedi and practiced by cultures that have been nearly obliterated by the Galactic Empire. The hint of a new alchemical recipe or scrap of knowledge should be enough to spark an adventure for a Mystic.

Although Unlimited Power features a variety of recipes and templates for crafting, the GM is encouraged to expand beyond what is presented. One Jedi Master's home might be a slimy mudhole to a newcomer, and a native Dathomiri might craft the same kinds of potions and poisons as a Thisspiasian from radically different materials.

Falling to the Dark Side

It is hard to deny the temptations of the dark side, and there are few Force users who have never felt its pull as they searched for the strength to defend their friends or avenge their loved ones. Unlimited Power delivers on its title, offering avenues for a GM to allow dark side player characters into the campaign. Whether they exist in secret among the player characters or a dark side PC attempts to lead their former comrades into darkness, the inclusion of characters who are falling or have fallen to the dark side is rife with opportunity for exciting new stories.

Unlimited Power details the ways in which a GM and a player can work to conceal the player's fall from the rest of the party until it is revealed through the story. There are also multiple solutions to resolving conflict between characters who are now likely in opposition to each other without spilling over into hard feelings between players.

With a dark side player in the campaign, Morality can take on a different role as well. While Morality is normally only adjusted as a result of Conflict, dark side characters often participate in actions that would impact their Morality without requiring a die roll. Similarly, the redemption of a once-fallen character should not leave Morality to chance. While direct adjustments to a character's Morality should be rare, Unlimited Power details how a GM can incorporate them—as well as how to best conceal a dark side character's morality from other players.

Harness Unlimited Power

To see everything that Unlimited Power has to offer your campaign, you'll have to peer within, looking for its new equipment and adventures, new Mystic specializations, new races, and more.

The Evolution of PaizoCon's Monday Events!

Paizo - Fri, 05/18/2018 - 23:00

The Evolution of PaizoCon's Monday Events!

Friday, May 18, 2018

My very first PaizoCon, and the only one I've been at as an attendee and not an employee, was in 2009. It was an amazing experience to be surrounded by so many gamers and gaming professionals excited to share their knowledge and sit down and game as a community. One particular highlight came on the last day as things were winding down. Employees and fans started informally gathering in the lobby area of the hotel and it provided a unique experience getting to ask questions and listen to expertise from not only the game designers and developers, but operational staff as well. I had a unique experience getting to learn about some of the aspects of what keeps the amazing RPG books I loved in print and shipping out. When a customer service position opened at Paizo a few months later, I had no hesitation to apply since this casual networking had let me know that the people I was hoping to work with were fantastic, friendly people. As the convention has grown and moved hotels around, sometimes without a good central lobby space, that kind of connecting atmosphere has been harder to figure out how to facilitate.

A few years ago we moved to Memorial Day weekend, turning PaizoCon into a 4 day convention. Monday's have always been a bit difficult day to predict for scheduling as many folks use this day as a travel day and are worrying about checking out of the hotel, thus making attendance for Monday events much lower than those same events would traditionally pull on one of the other days. Thinking about both of these puzzles together, we've decided to try a bit of an experiment with PaizoCon Monday's schedule.

There will be the traditional 50 tables of organized play Monday morning and Delves-two Playtest and one Starfinder. But this year we're only putting one panel on the schedule, a Playtest feedback seminar where attendees can talk with the designers about how their Playtest experiences at PaizoCon went, and we have no scheduled individual games. Instead, from 10am to 1pm we have over 30 Paizo employees from all departments who will be up in the Evergreen Rooms ready to play our favorite casual board & card games. I'll be there with one of my favorites, Settlers of Catan and I've heard from other folks that games like Dice Forge, One Deck Dungeon, Sentinels of the Multi-Verse, Undercity/Widower's Wood, Island of Dreams, Munchkin Nightmare Before Christmas, Munchkin Rick and Morty, and variations of Fluxx might all make appearances. If you have young kids I'll also be bringing copies of Dinosaur Escape and Spookies. There will also be two employees in Olympic 1 who will be hooking up video games to play on the the seminar projector and bringing a Switch to battle in Mario Kart. For those who are still hoping to play pick up games with other attendees, all of the Cascade rooms will be open for use.

My hope is that the more casual aspect of gaming will help facilitate both PaizoCon attendees and employees getting an opportunity to interact and have fun together in a semi structured environment. As this is an experiment this year, if you have any feedback, please let us know at paizocon@paizo.com.

See you next week!

Car Wars Midville

RPGNow - Fri, 05/18/2018 - 22:05
Car Wars MidvillePublisher: Steve Jackson Games
Welcome to Midville.
Now Go Home.

Midville, Ohio, used to be a nice, sleepy little mid-American town. But that was before the cycle gangs came . . . and left with their tails between their legs! Now, thanks to UBN's hit show Crash City, it's famous – and all the Crash City fans are showing up to see if Midville is really "The Toughest Little Town in America."

Midville has a rep to protect. If you're a visitor, you'll get the right hand of friendship extended in a neighborly fashion. If you're a biker or some other troublemaker, watch out. The MONDOs are the toughest neighborhood-watch team this side of the Texas Rangers!

But if you're looking for action, Midville is the place. If it isn't an over-exuberant Crash City fan shooting up downtown, it's a full-scale battle between MONDOs and whoever happens to be closest!

Midville gives you a look at a not-so-typical small town of the 2040s. Inside you'll find:

  • A 24-page rulebook with background, descriptions, and scenarios
  • Four 21" × 32" maps, which can be used on their own or with maps from Car Wars Deluxe Edition or Boat Wars
  • An 8" × 10" full-color counter sheet containing everything from duelling teams to city vehicles

Some of this material appeared in Crash City, Car Wars Expansion Set 3 and other Car Wars products.

The maps for this supplement were originally printed on oversized paper, so this PDF contains two formats: the original map size, for those with access to oversize printers, and modified versions that span multiple regular sheets.

GM's Maps #51: English Country House

RPGNow - Fri, 05/18/2018 - 21:52
GM's Maps #51: English Country HousePublisher: Gethsemane Games

Map making can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating for GMs, especially GMs with limited time to begin with. In our new 'GM's Maps' range, we will be providing a range of pre-made maps for you to use in your games.

The map presented in this product is an English Country Mansion built in the Jacobean style. These grand houses once doted the British landscape and were the homes and centres of power for the British landed gentry.

Almost all of these houses have a long history and at least one ghost story associated with them but this product presents you with a range of possible uses for the house as well as a more detailed discussion about the history and role of these grand country mansions.

Included are suggestions for espionage and weird science scenarios, treasure hunts, historical intrigue to sieges during the English civil war or zombie apocalypse among several other ideas for how to ingrate this 4 story building into your RPG campaigns.

Suitable for historical, modern, near future, or fantasy settings.
