December 12, 2017: Our Vanishing Supply Of Munchkin Holiday Grab Box(es)

Tue, 12/12/2017 - 12:03
Holiday Grab Box It's the holidays, gang, and that means it is time to find gifts for your favorite person . . . yourself! Wait. No. Stop. I'm being told that this festive time of year is about gifts for others. So it is best to focus on finding gifts for your favorite person . . . you, on Christmas morning! After all, a future version of yourself is a totally different person, right? Makes perfect sense to me. (This may be why I am not invited to gift exchanges.)

Fortunately, we know exactly what you want: lots of loot! And that's why we assembled the Munchkin Holiday Grab Box and even larger Munchkin Santa-Sized Holiday Grab Box. Each of these is a giant mailer box loaded with Munchkin loot; it was thanks to the support of your fellow Munchkin collectors that these crates of cheer were created and released into the wild. We've mailed hundreds of these boxes already, and we're watching the shelves empty out as Christmas grows closer and closer, meaning that there will be a sad day not too far in the future when all these boxes are gone.

Exactly what loot is packed into each box? That would be telling. Every box is randomized, though, so even if we gave you an itemized list of what is in one box, there's no guarantee that a second box would have identical contents. It's a surprise, so jump in with both feet and load down your favorite person – you, remember? – with Munchkin gear for the holidays! I suppose that you could give one of these boxes to a friend, but if you do, make absolutely certain that your friend invites you over to play Munchkin on Christmas Eve. It's the last chance to do something nice before Santa shows up . . .

December 11, 2017: Be The Architect With Castellan!

Mon, 12/11/2017 - 12:02
Castellan Feel like giving your noggin some exercise? Try Castellan on for size!

Designed by Beau Beckett, Castellan is a really fun way to strengthen your spatial-awareness skills. Two players work together to build a castle. As you add walls, you enclose courtyards that you claim with a Keep. Every tower in that courtyard gives you points! The game comes with cards that determine what pieces you can use each turn, but you need to plan the best way to place them.

This game speaks to those who want to build their strategy skills in a fun way, since you can and should plan your moves to get the most points while blocking your opponent from scoring. The game's plastic components are beautifully detailed, letting you see your courtyards grow in the course of the game.

Castellan is perfect for families - it keeps adult minds sharp and helps kids grow their spatial ability while giving them something tangible to play with. (Okay, the play value is good for adults, too.) Plus, its simple mechanics are easy to learn. Castellan received a Recommended designation by Mensa in 2015, so you know it's good for your little one's brain! Plus, if you also buy the international edition, you can expand the game to include up to four players.

Those who love strategy and building things will find this satisfyingly challenging, no matter your age. It's an engaging way to exercise your brain – your most important body part, without question!

To see more of the components and get a quick rules rundown, like our Facebook page and watch our #SJGamesLive stream, featuring a Castellan unboxing and how-to-play!

So hurry up and get Castellan at your friendly local game store or Warehouse 23.

December 10, 2017: The Krampus: Santa's Better Half

Sun, 12/10/2017 - 15:01
Krampus I'm a huge fan of holidays, especially Christmas, and as such, I spend a lot of time reading about the history of these days we hold dear. One of my favorite tales is that of the Krampus, which varies from culture to culture but is generally some kind of half-demon that punishes wicked children. That's right; Santa wasn't always doling out sticks and coal to bad little children; he hung out with a goat-man that wanted to whip them.

While most Americans who celebrate Christmas tend to recognize Christmas Eve and Day as the primary celebrations, there have been many variations throughout history, and a lot of them involved our demon Krampus. My favorite involves the Feast of St. Nicholas, traditionally held on December 6. In Europe, the eve of the feast, December 5, was once called Krampusnacht (Krampus Night in German, though it had different names depending on the region). This was the night Krampus visited homes and businesses to whip wicked little kids with branches or whips. He even carted some of the evil children away for potential drownings. But hey, it's all good, Saint Nicholas is there with some toys, probably, right?

So seeing as we made it past December 5, I assume you've all been good this year, and the Krampus hasn't decended on your homes. But stay on guard; the legend of the Krampus seems to be making a comeback. Featured in movies and TV (warning, potentially graphic content), and even festivals and celebrations seem to be growing in popularity for this wintery wanderer. National Geographic has a great video about the history, as well; definitely worth a view for the costumes alone. Watch your hindquarters!

December 7, 2017: Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game Designer's Notes

Thu, 12/07/2017 - 15:00
Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game Pyramid #3/106Now that the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game is in shops, you might want to learn more about it before you spend your hard-earned . . . or, if you already have a copy, you may be seeking inspiration from the thinking behind the design. A great place to start would be the five "designer's notes" articles we published on Medium. These came out back in September 2016, around the time of the launch of the Kickstarter, after the books were edited and the rules substantially finalized but before we put the finishing touches on the game. Pyramid #3/106 is also worth a look, because it contains "Designer's Notes: Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game," written in late June 2017, after everything – including the Dungeon Fantasy GM Screen and Dungeon Fantasy Companion – was as final as could be and off to the printer.

December 6, 2017: No Peeking Inside The Munchkin Holiday Grab Box!

Wed, 12/06/2017 - 14:59
We released the Munchkin Holiday Grab Box and Munchkin Santa-Sized Holiday Grab Box to supporters of the Kickstarter project a few months ago, and watching as Munchkin fans ripped open their packages and dug through the goodies inside was a bit of a blast for all of the elves here at the office. We wanted every box to be a surprise, so imagine our shock when one of you naughty Munchkin players, Lance Kirkman, shot and posted videos as you unboxed the two different packages. And you even shared the game rules with the world?! That is not how you win, Lance; you've just given all of your potential opponents an idea of the weapons that they could use against you if they order the boxes for themselves, using those links right above.

Thank you, Lance, for sharing these videos with the world. Though why you were peeking inside the boxes before Christmas is a question I suppose we'll never answer.

Munchkin Clowns

Run, the clowns are here! Well, you should run to your nearest game store and preorder Munchkin Clowns!

Munchkin Clowns will add the scariest part of the circus to your Munchkin deck. If any of your friends have coulrophobia, rest assured that this will work to your advantage. With these cards, you can wear your Big Red Shoes and Big Red Nose for big bonuses, and make a joke out of every Monster that comes your way when you Kick Down the Door.

December 2, 2017: Triplanetary Kickstarter Delayed to January 2018!

Sat, 12/02/2017 - 11:53
Triplanetary 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . . . Abort launch! Abort launch!

Well, that is embarassing. Fans who visited our booth at PAX Unplugged or checked out our unboxing on #SJGamesLive were waiting with bated breath for the Triplanetary Kickstarter. Well, November 20 came and went, with no campaign start. While we were happy with the state of the campaign, we wanted to add a little more. This won't be a huge campaign, with tons of bells and whistles, but we did want to make sure we gave something special to fans of the classic game, as well as new arrivals looking to explore the solar system.

Plus, we've waited 27 years to make Triplanetary a reality; we can wait a tad longer to make it perfect.

The new launch date is set for January 15, 2018. Keep that Christmas money from grandma safe. It's going to come in handy! And make sure to follow us on Kickstarter to get an alert when we launch the project!

December 1, 2017: Ogre Miniatures Set 2 Crushed Its Goal!

Fri, 12/01/2017 - 11:51
Ogre Miniatures Set 2 It has been quite a busy November for our Ogre fans, with new Ogrezine articles, the Ogre Miniatures Set 1 delivery and release, and, of course, the Ogre Miniatures Set 2 Kickstarter!

The campaign closed Monday, raising $87,366, which brings our Many Minis box to a whopping 375 miniatures. That's about 20 cents per miniature - an absolute steal for any miniatures wargamer. Not only do our backers get an amazing deal on a lot of plastic, they've added value for all Ogre fans, like the Ogre decals and a PDF of transfers usable with any of your Ogre Miniatures. We'll also have full Ogre tournament rules, thanks to this campaign.

Now the fun begins, as the production process swings into gear. Fortunately, we had a bit more lead time, given the success of Ogre Miniatures Set 1, so we're farther along in the process than our first campaign, but there's still a lot to do. If you're the impatient sort, make sure you check out the offerings for Ogre Miniatures Set 1! You can find the base set at your local game store soon, and if you're looking to expand your army, the Armory Box (available for preorder now) will be shipping soon.

Make sure to follow us on Kickstarter to be alerted when we launch more projects, like a potential Ogre Miniatures Set 3! We're currently focused on getting Set 2 produced, but line editor Drew Metzger has been kicking around ideas for a new set, with info from backers . . .

Without the backers, these Ogre projects would not get made, so thank you all for your continued support!

November 29, 2017: Dungeon Fantasy Tips: Superior Spellcasters

Wed, 11/29/2017 - 11:49
Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying GameOur earlier advice on delvers for the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game didn't talk much about specific professions but did mention ST, DX, damage, defense, weapons, etc. So, what about magic? Here are some tips for creating and playing effective bards, clerics, druids, and wizards:

Plan ahead! Skim Spells to decide which spells you want, noting prerequisites. Earmark enough character points from your advantage allocation to buy the highest level of spellcasting talent (Bardic Talent, Magery, or Power Investiture) your choices require. For a bard or wizard, count prerequisite spells, their prerequisites, and so on, to determine how many spells you're really buying – you may need to use points from quirks to afford them all, and you might have to shorten your wish list. If your favorite spells aren't available to your chosen profession, rethink your line of work before going further.

Have the energy to work your magic. Mostly this means Fatigue Points (FP) and Energy Reserve (ER). (Don't count on burning Hit Points – that's a last-ditch measure that causes spells to fail and knocks you out!) Focus on ER, because it recovers simultaneously with the FP you already have, and regenerates even when not resting. Regaining FP and ER goes faster with Recover Energy (Spells, p. 38) at skill 15+, so reserve character points for that. There's also energy in your power item (Adventurers, p. 115); you'll probably get to tap it just once per adventure, so it's best for emergencies, but consider trading points from quirks for cash and spending some money here. Learn key spells at skill 15-19, which reduces energy cost by one; if you can afford (IQ + spellcasting talent) = 17+, the minimum 1 character point per spell buys skill 15+ with IQ/Hard spells.

Dungeon Fantasy CompanionUse tactics. About 80% of spells are Regular or Area, so you'll often be casting at -1 per yard of distance. You can reduce distance with a magic staff (Spells, p. 9). Don't count on staying out of harm's way, but jet spells (Spells, p. 12) increase reach in melee combat and Missile spells (Spells, pp. 13-14) can blast opponents from afar. Don't neglect mobility, either – take a step toward your target when you Concentrate or Attack, and avoid spending so many FP that you're at half Move (Exploits, p. 63), barely able to maneuver. As you'll probably end up in the action, see to your active defenses, whether by wielding a quarterstaff (+2 to Parry), getting a Defense Bonus (from a cloak, shield, or Shield spell), or learning a Blocking spell (Spells, p. 14).

Remember that spells require success rolls. The leading causes of failure are distance penalties and the -1 per spell "on" (Spells, p. 11). Get close to subjects, friend or foe – and be careful about putting tons of "buffs" on yourself or your allies, or tagging numerous foes with enduring spells. Offensive spells are often Resisted, meaning powerful enemies may shrug them off; only cast these when your effective skill is high (few penalties), preferably on opponents known to have low HT or Will and no Magic Resistance. Jet and Missile spells aren't Resisted, but they can miss, and enemies can dodge or block, so choose easy-to-hit victims. In short, as energy is a valuable resource, don't waste it bouncing expensive spells off well-protected subjects (and if you can, cast a big Missile spell before the fight, recover the energy, and start with heavy firepower "for free"!).

Dungeon Fantasy GM ScreenAvoid the "artillery fallacy." Large Area spells can affect multiple foes in theory, but many are so slow to cast that enemies won't be bunched up by the time you're done, so expensive that you can't recast them, and/or Resisted. Most jet and Missile spells affect one target – and for the exceptions (Concussion, Explosive Fireball, Explosive Lightning), damage diminishes quickly with distance. In combat, casters are snipers rather than artillery, striking vulnerable individuals with specific spells that can affect them – or they're medics, helping nearby allies.

Gear up. Consider a magic staff – and if your weapon is one-handed (a "staff" can be a one-handed stick), pair it with a cloak or shield. Even if you're no warrior, wearing armor can save your life. If you have spare cash, consider paut (Adventurers, p. 116) for an energy boost – or charged scrolls (Adventurers, p. 117) for when your energy is gone. To exploit mobility, seek ways to keep your loadout from encumbering you; e.g., Fortify (Adventurers, p. 118) on your free starting clothing adds DR without significant weight. At the end of your shopping trip, designate your priciest purchase as a high-capacity power item.

And after each adventure, hang on to scrolls and books containing spells to learn, magic items that store energy or grant bonuses to individual spells or even IQ, costly gewgaws that make excellent power items, and rare artifacts intended for members of your profession. Dungeon Fantasy Magic Items, in the Dungeon Fantasy Companion, touches on many of these areas.

November 28, 2017: Munchkin Shakespeare Play Events!

Tue, 11/28/2017 - 11:47
Shakespeare Events Hark! What light through yonder window breaks? 'Tis an event, and Munchkin Shakespeare Deluxe the game.

That's right: It's time for some bard-inspired events at a game store near you! Each session will feature demos or games of Munchkin Shakespeare Deluxe, plus plenty of promo cards and bookmarks with special Munchkin rules on them.

As in any Munchkin game, you fight monsters and collect loot to reach Level 10 first – but in this version, all the monsters and treasures are Shakespearean! Fight the dreaded Two Bees . . . or the even more dreaded Not Two Bees. Protect yourself with the Tutu, Solid Flesh and trip up your enemies with the Fall Staff.

If you like Shakespeary-in-jokes, these events are for you.

Munchkin Shakespeare Deluxe Play Events are being held the weekend of December 1 (that's December 1, 2, and 3), so call your game store ahead of time to find out exactly when they're holding theirs. If you attend an event that week, you can enter yourself to win prizes if you post a picture of Munchkin Shakespeare Deluxe being played, with the hashtag #PlayMunchkin!

November 27, 2017: Ogre, Munchkin, GURPS, And More For Cyber Monday!

Mon, 11/27/2017 - 11:42
[Image] Today is Cyber Monday, that special "holiday" where we rush to the Internet to take advantage of special offers on everything from books to films to socks to, yes, games. In celebration of this day, we thought it was a good idea to list all of our fantastic offers for those who are looking for more Ogre, Munchkin, and GURPS to add to your game collections (or to give as holiday gifts).
  • Ogre Miniatures Set 2 – The Kickstarter project closes today, so this is your chance to grab hundreds of miniatures for only $75. Do you want over 1,000 Ogre plastic miniatures? Well, there's a reward level for that! For those outside of the U.S., Warehouse 23 has preorders open for Ogre Miniatures Set 2 and the Ogre Miniatures Set 2 Many Minis package.
  • Ogre Armory Set 1 – Need even more Ogre plastic miniatures and don't want to wait until 2018 to start assembling and painting? That's where this $100 box of minis enters the picture. We'll start shipping these out in December, so preorder your box today, and we'll try to deliver to you before Christmas. (Orders shipping outside of the U.S. will not be there before Christmas.)
  • Munchkin Collectible Card Game Preorder – The new Munchkin CCG doesn't launch until late February, so we have opened up a limited-time preorder offer for all three starters, a dozen boosters, and a holiday greeting card. We'll drop the card in the mail before Christmas so you can show your favorite Munchkin opponent that you can't wait to destroy them at a new game . . . or keep it for yourself! We won't judge.
  • Munchkin Gift Pack – We understand. You're pressed for time and need a little help with wrapping presents. This special pack of three pre-wrapped Munchkin games makes your holidays easier when you slap on a gift tag (included!) and give the games to your friends. And if you keep the five new game cards for your collection . . . well, it's what Spyke would do. He might even use the included greeting card to gloat about it.
  • Munchkin Holiday Grab Box – Over $100 worth of Munchkin loot in a single $60 box! And since it is all sealed up and ready to go, all you'll need to do is slap your own greeting over the mailing label and surprise a friend with an instant Munchkin collection. And if this box isn't enough to cover the greed of the holidays, we have an even bigger box available.
  • GURPS Archive Mystery Bundle – We recently cleaned our product archives, pulling out extra copies of various GURPS books that date back to the launch of the game in the '80s. Rather than toss the excess books, we constructed the GURPS Archive Mystery Bundle, over $60 worth of GURPS for only $30. No two bundles are identical, and the books inside date from the last 10, 20, and 30 years! This would make a good gift, but we won't tell if you pull a book or two from the bundle for your own collection.
In addition to all of those deals, Warehouse 23 is holding a sale on select items until the end of this month. Click here for the full sale list, and then get ready to play Santa and spread gaming cheer to all of your friends and family for the holidays!

November 26, 2017: Illuminated Site of the Week: Most Of It Is Pretty Much The Same As Yesterday

Sun, 11/26/2017 - 11:40
Perhaps it's a bit of hubris when someone calls their online magazine Universe Today, especially given the tenure of its subject matter, but the writers go as fast as they can to keep up with what we know. If you want the latest on Cassini, the International Space Station, or findings of possible life-sustaining planets, you can get it within these pages – but it doesn't end there.

They also have to answer questions when some reader wants to know how to destroy the sun or moon, or play Whack-A-Mole regarding conspiracies about former president Barack Obama teleporting to the planet Mars (back in the day; worry not, no one is claiming he went there during business hours in his administration). Knowing how different it could look moment-to-moment, Universe Today is as close to current as this crazy world gets.
