May 27, 2018: Illuminated Site of the Week: The Best Offense Is A Psychic Defense

3 hours 11 min ago
Popular opinion has it when he died, Nicola Tesla was sitting on plans for a death ray. These were subsequently picked up when his hotel room was raided by secret government forces. MuckRock claims it was even worse than this, though. According to Tom Bearden – you may recall he champions the existence and use of free energy from "the vacuum" – not only did the Russians gain control of some of Tesla's offensive secrets, they had the best defense against them: Tesla shield technology. The famed engineer's energy howitzers could knock our missiles out of the sky, but any that got through would simply impact on the force field surrounding the offending silos and cities. And these cannons weren't limited to hitting us with electricity – they could also throw time at us. Yes, actual time, used as a payload to age or obliterate whatever it hit.

How do we all know this? Through the CIA's psychic research project, of course. This is one page that just keeps giving.

May 26, 2018: Munchkin Collectible Card Game Starters Back In The Warehouse!

15 hours 12 min ago
Munchkin CCG When we launched the Munchkin Collectible Card Game earlier this year, we were painfully short on the game's three Starter Sets, leaving some of our larger distributors without any games for retailers. While the game's starters never quite reached "impossible to find" status over the last quarter, there were more friendly local game stores without access to the starters than we were expecting. Fortunately, we can now report that the reprint of all three sets has arrived and we've started shipping the games to our distributors.

There is one significant difference between this latest wave and the game's first printing. As we mentioned back in February, the first-printing starters included a bonus Munchkin Collectible Card Game booster pack. This latest printing, however, does not include that bonus. Those of you who can find the first printing – look for the seal on the front of the box stating there's a booster inside – will want to buy one to take advantage of the extra value that we packed into the first run.

The starters are back in the warehouse just in time for the release of the game's first expansion, The Desolation of Blarg, which is set to reach stores later this month. You can get a look at the upcoming expansion in this Facebook Live video, where Rhea pops open a few packs and shows off some of the expansion cards.

May 25, 2018: Announcements For September

Fri, 05/25/2018 - 16:29
September is going to be chock-full of big releases, including a spin on a classic, a new edition of a veteran in our lineup, a classic reprint, and a brand-new dexterity game. Let's get into it! Munchkin Side QuestsMunchkin Side Quests

Take the scenic route with a new way to play any Munchkin game!

When you need a short detour from the business of killing monsters and betraying your friends, try Munchkin Side Quests! This 30-card expansion can be added to any of your Munchkin games, and it's illustrated by Ian McGinty (who has previously drawn for the Munchkin Collectible Card Game and Munchkin Magical Mess). Get secret in-game goals that you can complete to cash in for a reward AND, just maybe, surprise everyone with a new way to win the game! IlluminatiIlluminati

The classic game of conspiracies gets an update and face lift!

Illuminati was an instant hit when it was released in 1982 and won the Origins Award for Best Science Fiction Boardgame. It has been Steve Jackson's signature title ever since.

This second edition updates some references and gives a pulpy, graphical revamp courtesy of Lar DeSouza (Super Munchkin Guest Artist Edition, Munchkin Collectible Card Game).  Two to six players compete to take control of groups ranging from the FBI and CIA to the Dentists, increasing their wealth and power for further takeovers, until one rules supreme. Every player has different victory conditions! No ploy is too devious, no stratagem too low, as you scheme your way to victory. Blob LobberBlob Lobber

Lob gobs of blobs!

Blob Lobber is a fast-paced card game for 2 to 4 players where players take turns flinging Blob cards. If your card lands with a Bomb showing, you claim all the enemy Blobs beneath it . . . but if more Blobs turn up, your opponents may be able to Bomb more Blobs than you! Grab your friends and lob some cards! SPANCSPANC

SPANC is back in print, just in time for the 10th anniversary! Life is good when you're a Space Pirate Amazon Ninja Catgirl. Enjoy a life of larceny and mayhem as you embark on one Caper after another. Defeat every challenge the galaxy throws at you, from the Friendly Guard Puppies all the way to the Fiendish Death Trap. Pick up Toys (and the occasional Poolboy), grab more Loot than anyone else, and watch your tail . . . because the other catgirls want what you've got!   Lovingly illustrated by Phil Foglio, SPANC is a fast-paced card game of space pirates, amazons, ninja, and catgirls. All at once.

When you're a munchkin, every day can be Christmas, with all that loot out there in the world, just ripe for the plundering. The rest of the world hasn't quite caught up to this enlightened philosophy, however, and so it's up to us to start the ball rolling.

Christmas In July

Next Tuesday, we'll be launching the Munchkin Christmas in July Kickstarter, your chance to get well over $90 worth of Munchkin loot for $60, which includes U.S. shipping. (Sorry, we can't offer international shipping on this one. We'll have some tips for our customers around the world who want to use a U.S. forwarding agent, or you can hit up an American friend to order it for you.) We'll include our usual assortment of promo swag in this one, and we'll also have some stretch goals to make the boxes better for everyone. And if you're among the first 150 to back the project, Steve will sign the bookmark inside your box!

Make sure to follow us on Kickstarter and all our social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) to be the first in your group to know when this Kickstarter is live. And, hey: Merry Christmas!

May 21, 2018: New Releases For April

Wed, 05/23/2018 - 04:23
GURPS Reign of Steel GURPS Voodoo

No fooling! April was an exciting time to be a fan of GURPS, with the re-release (thanks to our On Demand program) of three of the best-known, classic GURPS settings:

GURPS Reign of Steel – a desperate post-apocalyptic fight against robot overlords.

GURPS Technomancer – a modern-era world where technology and magic reign supreme.

GURPS Voodoo – a shadow war against the forces of darkness.

Although designed for GURPS Third Edition, these worlds are still perfect inspiration for your GURPS gaming. In fact, Reign of Steel even has a supplement – GURPS Reign of Steel: Will to Live – that works in tandem with the original sourcebook to upgrade the setting to GURPS Fourth Edition.

These books join the dozens of others that are available On Demand, perfect for players who want their GURPS gaming in print. Check out what's available; your bookshelves will thank you!

April also saw the release of two other GURPS supplements awaiting your download from Warehouse 23:

 Caverntown

Pyramid #3/114: Mind Over Magic

GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Setting: Caverntown – a ready-to-use location for GURPS Dungeon Fantasy that brings the heroes closer to subterranean escapades than ever before . . . by being underground and within a stone's throw of a megadungeon!

Pyramid #3/114: Mind Over Magic – an assortment of arcane add-ons to your GURPS games, with evil artifacts, glass-based magic, and . . . carnies?!

Ogrezine

One more surprise arrived in April: fans of Ogre got to experience the incredible Ogrezine – a collection of 16 articles that include scenarios, fiction, historical essays, and variant options. If you somehow don't get rolled over by the giant cybernetic tanks, you might well be bowled over by the stunning new artwork in this full-color PDF.

If April showers bring May flowers, then April was awash with new gaming goodness from Steve Jackson Games! (And with the seasons changing, just wait to see what goodness we spring on you soon . . .)

May 20, 2018: Gaming Clubs

Sun, 05/20/2018 - 13:21
Are gaming clubs still a thing? Are you a member of a club? Or a group that isn't a formal "club" but gets together regularly? How often do you meet and what do you play? How many members? What else should I ask?

I'd thought about doing a poll, but this is such an open-ended question . . . Please log in to the forums (link below) and tell me about your group, or regrettable lack of group, as the case may be.

May 19, 2018: Dungeon Fantasy In The Classroom

Sat, 05/19/2018 - 13:20
Thursday morning, in my middle-school classroom, a student shouted gleefully, "My spell just put the whole town to sleep!" At another table, a boy examined his character sheet and asked, "If I get Signature Gear for my backpack, does that mean all my stuff is invulnerable?" Nearby, a girl confided, "Instead of being a Cat-Folk, I've decided that I'm a human who can turn into a leopard!"

Dungeon Fantasy RPGG

This is not some experiment in gamifying social studies. It's part of a weekly program at my school where teachers sponsor a variety of activities intended to appeal to student interests beyond core academics. This spring, a colleague and I have had the privilege of introducing 20 middle schoolers to the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game

But they were doing it all wrong.

In preparation for the activity, we purchased a few box sets, GM screens, and extra dice at a local game shop. We capped the activity at 20 students, divided into four tables of five — one GM and four players. We selected a set of pregenerated characters from the Delvers to Go book in the Dungeon Fantasy GM Screen and various characters posted to the DFRPG forum. For simplicity's sake, we limited roles to warriors (mostly knights and barbarians), clerics, wizards, and thieves, recommending that groups select one character from each role. We modified a few characters to keep things appropriate for middle school (e.g., no lechery) and ensured that there was a diverse array to choose from.

At our first 45-minute session, I gave a short presentation on the basics of roleplaying games and the 3d6 mechanic in DFRPG. Students formed groups and chose a GM. As students chose characters, we looked over character sheets together, made adjustments, and discussed the significance of key abilities. Disadvantages and quirks were popular topics, with most students immediately appreciating the value of a clever quirk.

I planned to run an interactive tutorial on combat at our second session, but the students were raring to go. No more tutorials . . . they wanted to game. Two of the four GMs already had their own adventure ideas; the other two used I Smell a Rat. My teaching colleague and I simply made ourselves available to answer questions as they came up.

Rules fidelity was loose. Very loose. Remembering my own early days of gaming (where we misunderstood half the rules and made up the other half) helped me to swallow my affront at the beautiful system being shredded around me. Rarely have I seen 20 students more excited about an endeavor at school. So I shrugged, grinning at the proposition of a Backpack of Invulnerability, giving a thumbs-up to the Were-leopard of Doom, and replying to the intrepid archmage, "The whole town?!? Amazing!"

They were doing it exactly right. — Andrew Roy, Saint Paul, Minnesota

May 16, 2018: 20 Years Of GURPS Lite, 16 Days Of An Amazing Bundle!

Wed, 05/16/2018 - 13:17
One of the joys of having the oldest blog in the world is that you can reflect on your history in new and interesting ways. For example, 20 years ago today, we wrote about the newly released GURPS Lite. It was the perfect – and free! – gateway to GURPS Third Edition. This was years before GURPS Fourth Edition . . . but when we released that new version, we made sure to offer an updated (still free!) version of GURPS Lite then, too.

GURPS Bundle

Since then, Lite has found its way in various forms into many great books, including GURPS WWII, Transhuman Space, and the Vorkosigan Saga Sourcebook and Roleplaying Game.

We were brainstorming how to celebrate two decades of introducing GURPS, and we came upon an idea: Why not take a look back at those 20 years and offer a bundle on Warehouse 23 that spans this entire era?

So we did.

Behold . . . the 20 Years of GURPS Bundle! It's a collection of 22 PDFs, something from each year from 1998 to today. It includes best-sellers like GURPS After the End 1: Wastelanders and GURPS Thaumatology: Ritual Path Magic, historical classics including GURPS Classic: Celtic Myth and the GURPS WWII Core Rulebook, and just plain fun supplements like GURPS Zombies: Day One and GURPS Classic: All-Star Jam 2004. (Modesty forbids my mentioning that it also features a few of my favorite issues of Pyramid magazine, edited by yours truly.)

This bundle is a $207.79 value if you buy them individually, but it's currently available for only $50 – a savings of over 75%! (If you already have some of these items in your library, it may not be as good a deal for you, but tell your friends . . . and if you've purchased extra copies in your account, you are entitled to print another physical copy for your group's personal use!)

Hurry! This amazing deal is only available from now until May 31. Don't delay . . . buy it today!

May 14, 2018: Keep An Ace In The Hole With Munchkin Cheats!

Mon, 05/14/2018 - 13:16
When we ask people what they like to do in Munchkin, we get one answer more than anything else: Cheat.

Since real cheating is discouraged, we've created a new mini-expansion of cards dedicated to the underhanded arts. Munchkin Cheats gives players even more ways to play additional treasures and get an upper hand on the opponents. But watch out! It also includes new Monsters and Curses to punish those dirty, rotten cheaters.

Two Timer Gibbon

We've got a couple of preview cards, including some of the amazing new art from Lar DeSouza (Super Munchkin Guest Artist Edition, Munchkin Collectible Card Game). He gives some of the classic Munchkin characters his own twist!

Look for Munchkin Cheats at your local game store this June, and remember to cheat with both hands!

Now that Ogre Miniatures Set 1 is in stores, the Ogre Battle Box is in the final stages of assembly at the factory, and the Ogre Miniatures, Second Edition rules have met the funding goal on Kickstarter, we have opened preorders for Ogre fans outside the U.S. who wish to get their hands on the upcoming hardcover rulebook. This 64-page book is the newest edition of the ruleset first published in 1993, and the new book - along with the miniatures packed inside the Ogre Battle Box - give you all* you need to transport the classic Ogre wargame from hex maps to attractive, miniatures tabletop battles.

And if you're in the U.S. and already backing the project, you're of course welcome to preorder direct from Warehouse 23 if you need extra copies of the rules. We won't question why you need a dozen or so copies of the game . . . (Hey, the new book ships in November and will obviously make a great holiday gift when you're looking to introduce more of your friends to Ogre.)

* Well, all but terrain. You'll need to devise your own miniatures terrain. Sorry about that. Maybe we should produce some wargaming terrain for use with the Ogre Miniatures rules.

May 10, 2018: Ogre Miniatures Progress Report

Thu, 05/10/2018 - 13:11
The Ogre Miniatures Kickstarter is coming along well. We blew past the first stretch goal (so the book will be hardback) and are about halfway to the second goal (a diecut sheet with some miniatures that won't be available in plastic any time soon). If you are a supporter of the project, please take a moment to log in to Kickstarter and use the comments to give us your thoughts on what you'd like to see on this second diecut sheet. And (not to give anything away early) but maybe on a third sheet as well . . .

This is a minis ruleset with easy movement and quick combat resolution. It doesn't suffer from the "chart-itis" that afflicts some rules; with just a bit of familiarity, all you need is a single Combat Results Table. I've even heard from people who have modded Ogre Miniatures to use with WWII tanks. The scale has to change a bit, of course, and there are fewer one-hit kills, but they tell me it works!

If you haven't supported yet, please give the project a look. It is a short campaign, ending May 25. I appreciate your interest!

May 9, 2018: The Desolation Of Blarg Release Event Locations!

Wed, 05/09/2018 - 13:10
[Image] Now that you've had some time to meet Mugsy, Beezlebob, Barbarian the Librarian, and the rest of the Munchkin Collectible Card Game core-set crew, it's time for some new faces - in The Desolation of Blarg expansion!

The first expansion for the Munchkin CCG starts hitting stores in late May and early June, so mark your calendar for the weekend of June 8. That Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are The Desolation of Blarg Release Events at local game stores all around the U.S. and Canada!

Find an event near you to get some brand-new cards - including Blarg himself, a neutral Monster. (He not only packs a wallop, but might get to deal 2 bonus damage to a stashed Monster.) And for attending, you'll probably get some promos!

That includes Potted Plant promos, which aren't in any booster packs; three alternate-art, never-before-seen The Desolation of Blarg cards; and the Flamingo Wanderer, a new draft Hero.

Some stores will run their Release Event as a draft or a sealed tournament. Others may run learn-to-play or casual-play events. If your favorite local game store below doesn't list a time and date, call them for details.

We are also running a social-media contest during these events: Post #PlayMunchkinCCG with a picture of your event on June 8, 9, and 10, and you're automatically entered to win an acrylic level dial.

And now, on to the list of locations!

May 8, 2018: Ogre Miniatures Second Edition Kickstarter

Tue, 05/08/2018 - 13:09
After many, many months of checking, play, and revision from myself and Drew Metzger, we've finally launched the second edition of the Ogre Miniatures rulebook.

ogre miniatures kickstarter image

This edition features brand-new miniatures painting and photography by Ben Williams; a cover by Brandon Moore; a set of 24 two-sided Ogre record sheets; and die-cut blast templates for spillover fire. Easy to learn and fast-moving, Ogre Miniatures is miniatures armor as it should be played. The original release won the Origins Award for Best Miniature Rules.

The Kickstarter launched yesterday, and it will be a short one, running about 2.5 weeks. As of this writing, we are only about $2,500 away from our funding goal!

To be notified when future Kickstarters launch, follow us on Kickstarter (if you don't already).

As always, thank you for your support!

– Steve Jackson
