October 18, 2017: Pre-Order Dungeon Fantasy At Your Local Store

6 hours 57 min ago
Dungeon Fantasy Our new Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game started shipping to project supporters last month, and many of the U.S. backers have already received their games. The initial responses have been spectacular, so now it is time we direct our attention away from fulfilling the Kickstarter project to launching the game in stores.

If you've not yet preordered the game, we have this handy PDF preorder form that you can print and take to your local store. Submit the form to your store in the next few weeks, because we expect to ship this new GURPS boxed roleplaying game to distributors in mid-October, meaning that the game could be in stores by Halloween week.

If you've already got your copy, please join the discussion on our forums. There, you can engage with other players, as well as our GURPS creative team, and get the latest info on the game.

October 17, 2017: Port Royal: An Appreciation

Tue, 10/17/2017 - 11:01
Port Royal I enjoyed Port Royal the first time I played it – and the second time, and the third time, and so on. It's got pirates, which is never a bad thing, but what it's really got is that Euro vibe of building an economic engine. However, play is way simpler and faster than, for instance, Puerto Rico . . . without ending too quickly. In terms of play time, the game hits the sweet spot for me: about a half-hour, sometimes less.

Also in the Euro style, Port Royal rewards attention to your opponents, but has no direct headbashing assaults. You can do things to inconvenience the other players, especially the one to your left, but it's definitely you vs. the deck, and not at all "screw your buddy."

A central mechanic is "push your luck." But by putting the right cards in play, you can insure – to a point – against bad draws. The balance between skill and luck is good. You usually have the opportunity to play, in a small way, on each opponent's turn, so you don't sit there drumming your fingers and waiting for your own turn.

On the whole, then – if you like the Euro style of game design, I expect you will like Port Royal. It didn't win those awards by accident, and we're proud to be able to bring it to you in English. Thank you, Alexander Pfister, for a great game.

October 16, 2017: Illuminated Site of the Week: Sorry, Zone Of What, Again?

Mon, 10/16/2017 - 23:00
Not so loud. If you ask UNESCO, sure, you're going to get the boring party line about the Jornada Biosphere Reserve, its location and ecosystem and blah-blah-blah. Let's shoot straight: It's a stretch of desert in Mexico, home to La Zona del Silencio or the "Zone of Silence." Here, it is said, radio signals don't work and strange electromagnetic fields wander from one spot to another.

Want more? So do the ladies who visit these fields. Rumor has it that a visit to the zone can improve a woman's chances of conceiving a child. So the fact that America lost an Athena rocket here (in and of itself suspicious, no?) and had to send Wernher von Braun to fetch it, and that UFOs make repeated flyovers, may be among the least interesting aspects of the lay of this land. There's more at Atlas Obscura.

October 15, 2017: Announcing Ogre Miniatures Set 2

Mon, 10/16/2017 - 23:00
Your Kickstarter support for the first Ogre Miniatures set was amazing, so we're doing it again!  The Ogre Miniatures 2 campaign will launch Nov. 13, as Set 1 supporters are receiving their rewards.

This time we are skipping the stretch goals and going straight to the final number of units. We have already made the molds, and you can see the results in the photos!

The set will include: One Ogre Mark IV (red) One Paneuropean Fencer with extra Fencer-B turret (blue) Supporting Paneuropean units from G.E.V. (blue):
  • 6 Superheavy Tanks
  • 4 Mobile Howitzers
  • 6 GEV-PCs with 3 infantry each (infantry are compatible with those from Set 1)
  • 12 Light Tanks
  • 12 Light GEVs
Like the first set, these are on sprues, unassembled and unpainted. Below you can see two views of the Fencer: an unpainted test shot from the mold, and Ben Williams' paint job.

We will offer the reverse set and other colors as add-ons, like last time.

Fencer Painted   Ogrezine Update While we're on Ogre, here's a brief update on Ogrezine. It's going very well. We have a lot of material that we like, and we have promises of more first drafts soon. But we're still open for submissions of art, scenarios, or fiction, so send them to Drew.

October 14, 2017: Muertoons Takes The Stage!

Sat, 10/14/2017 - 10:55
Muertoons It's not every day that a game we make has characters also featured in a play, and it's even less common that you could find them in the same place. Fortunately for us, serendipity happens!

All month, the Austin Scottish Rite Theater is performing Rosita y Conchita, a play celebrating Dia De Los Muertos. This perfectly seasonal production ties into our recent release: Muertoons! Our card game is based on the show of the same name, and the creator, Eric Gonzalez, based characters in that universe on his own books, namely, Rosita y Conchita. Even better, authors Eric Gonzalez and Erich Haeger will be attending the show later this month.

If you're in the Austin area, come by the show and celebrate this spooky time of year! I visited, and can tell you the theater is beautiful; I can't wait to check out a show! You can even pick up a copy of Muertoons in the foyer where they sell merchandise. But don't worry, if you aren't in the area, you can still get your own copy of Muertoons at your friendly local game store or Warehouse 23! Might want to grab some sugar skulls while you're out, too.

October 12, 2017: Munchkin Shakespeare: No Holds Bard

Thu, 10/12/2017 - 10:54
Munchkin Shakespeare Munchkin Shakespeare is out! It's been reaching Kickstarter backers for a month or so; I've really enjoyed watching the backers posting their just-unboxed sets on Twitter. It should hit stores any time now.

This set does not remix the works of Shakespeare. Not exactly. It would be more accurate to say that it folds, spindles, and mutilates them. The Bard loved puns, so it's nice to think that he would have liked this game. Yes, it's nice to think that. But probably not accurate. In reality, he's likely spinning in his grave. But the JoCo cruisers, who suggested the theme and a lot of the cards, are laughing madly . . . so it evens out. (For that whole story, see Andrew's article.)

I suppose I should say a bit about gameplay. This is a "Deluxe" set, so it has a board and standies. It uses all the classic races – Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling. As to classes, it starts with the venerable Wizard, Warrior, Cleric, and Thief, but it also adds Bard to the mix. Since there are Clerics, there are Undead to turn. My favorites are Henry IV Part I and Henry IV Part 2. Yes, we went there.

I also want to mention the demo set spawned by Shakespeare. Called (of course!) the Munchkin Shakespeare Staged Demo, it has 17 cards drawn from the Shakespeare set, but with alternate art by Lar deSouza! Use it to teach your friends the game, or just add to your own set and enjoy the ineffable art-ness of it all.

October 9, 2017: Conspiracy Theory Kickstarter Closes Today And The Game Will Not Go Into Distribution

Mon, 10/09/2017 - 10:52
Conspiracy Theory In today's crowded market, we're finding more and more that stand-alone games are ephemeral items, hitting store shelves and then vanishing from the public consciousness within a month or two. Of the thousands of new games published over the last few years, only a fraction have kept any long-term shelf presence. This is an industry-wide situation; many discussions with our fellow publishers often lead to "how do we best measure success these days?".

It was that current market attitude toward new games that led us to take our latest project, Conspiracy Theory, to Kickstarter. When the project launched last month, we had no idea of the level of demand. We had showed the game at a few places, including Gen Con, and players liked it, but we were left with the question: Should we publish this?

The Conspiracy Theory Kickstarter project has funded, and even met a few stretch goals, but it was not a runaway success. This tells us to publish, yes, but only for direct sales. There's enough demand to print a profitable game, but perhaps not enough to reinvest that profit into inventory for distribution. Instead, we're going to fulfill our Kickstarter commitments and offer the remaining copies through Warehouse 23 and our Amazon storefront.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us. You'll like the game! If you've not yet joined, the Kickstarter project closes later today, so there's still time, barely, to jump in. And retailers: We are making the game available direct from our warehouse to your store. Please contact us  ASAP if you want to take advantage of our case special. Hurry. We're closing that promotion down this week.

Steve Jackson

PS - Since the game will not go into distribution and there will almost certainly be no supplement published, I'm adding ten RED cards to the set. These open up a new mode of play. They were intended for later, but if there's not likely to be a "later," let's get them out there now and have fun with them.

October 8, 2017: Crowdfunding Focus: Starfinder Miniatures

Sun, 10/08/2017 - 10:51
Starfinder Miniatures A couple of years ago, we had the opportunity to partner with our friends at Paizo for Munchkin Pathfinder, Munchkin Pathfinder Deluxe, and Munchkin Pathfinder Guest Artist Edition. So we know just how beautifully detailed Paizo can make a tabletop roleplaying universe, as evidenced by the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. We have no doubt that Paizo's new science-fantasy tabletop RPG will engross just as many fans . . . in fact, the Starfinder Core Rulebook was released at Gen Con 50 this August and sold out on the first day!

To help Starfinder players get a completely immersive experience in their campaigns, Paizo partnered with Ninja Division to bring the Starfinder Masterclass Miniatures to Kickstarter. The pre-painted miniatures are made of high-quality resin, which allows for the meticulous detail and coloring on each piece.

This Kickstarter has four pledge levels, with every level increasing the amount and type of miniatures you will receive. There are also 30 stretch goals that offer more options for heroes, encounter packs, creatures, and fleets. With 9 days to go, the Starfinder Masterclass Miniatures have made over $200,000, quadruple their original goal.

To get an idea how much these would enhance the look of your next Starfinder campaign, check out the video on the Kickstarter page, admire the miniatures, and back them soon - there are still 5 fabulous stretch goals yet to be unlocked!

October 5, 2017: Learn The Munchkin Collectible Card Game With Hunter!

Thu, 10/05/2017 - 10:49
Our upcoming Munchkin Collectible Card Game is officially at print, and now we're gearing up for the launch in February. There'a lot of work that goes on between sending files to the printer and the cards reaching stores, and a big part of that involves introducing the game to all of you. This means we're preparing sample images, writing articles about game-play strategy, and taking the first steps toward the organized-play program (news to come).

Even though it's coming out in February, you can still let your local game store know that you are interested! Simply print out our handy-dandy preorder form, fill in what you want, and give it to your local retailer. They will do their part to get you the starters and boosters you are craving.

Another part of introducing the game is sharing how-to-play videos, and that is what Hunter did last week on Facebook. If you don't follow us on Facebook, please hit that "like" button so you get the latest info about the Munchkin CCG . . . and all of our new games! We have some big projects in the works for 2018, and we look forward to chatting with you on Facebook.

October 4, 2017: Illuminati 2018 Playtest

Wed, 10/04/2017 - 10:48
Illuminati After who-knows-how-many printings of Illuminati, it's time to refresh the cards to fit the current New World Order. So in 2018, that will happen.

In the process of reviewing the cards, well over half of them got renamed, revised, or totally replaced. And while I was doing that, I noticed a way in which the world is very different now. The Communist menace is less of a public bugaboo than it was a couple of decades ago. And, on the other side of the coin, government bodies now spend as much time suing each other as they do cooperating. Executive summary: I took out both the Communist and Government alignments. The new card set works fine without them. It still includes some governmental groups but they are no longer tagged as a specific alignment.

However, the media has become steadily more powerful, while quarreling madly within itself and often becoming a target of other organizations. So Media is now an official alignment, which gives media groups a bonus to control each other. That seems only fair.

We are seriously thinking about making the cards bigger in the new set: maybe tarot-sized, which is 70 x 120 mm. That will let us make both the type and the art bigger, but it will also take up more space on the table. Your feedback on this will be appreciated.

And, of course, we want your feedback on the new card set. You can find an unillustrated but playable PDF on the Illuminati site; make your own cards and take over the world of 2018. After you take over the world a few times, tell me what you think! Best way to communicate is on the forums – the discussion is already rolling.

PS – I would be remiss if I failed to mention the Conspiracy Theory project, now in its last days on Kickstarter. If you're reading this, you probably already know all about it, but fnord.

October 3, 2017: Take Candy From Kids Without The Guilt!

Tue, 10/03/2017 - 10:47
Ghosts Love Candy I have to admit that there's a bit of a villain in me. When I play a game, my goal is to make sure all my opponents lose badly. If a video game allows me to demolish vehicles, I'm going to make sure everyone explodes! (Cue evil laugh.)   Of course, stealing candy from kids in real life would go too far. But Ghosts Love Candy satisfies all would-be bad guys in two ways – you get to be a baddie without actually making little ones cry and you get to hoard candy! You can't eat it, since the candies are cards, but still . . .   With Halloween right around the corner, this is the perfect time to nab Ghosts Love Candy! In the game, it's the spookiest night of the year and you are a hungry ghost who loves candy and "lives" to haunt the costumed kids who have it. You need to be careful not to scare them too much, though, or they run away, taking your candy with them! At the end of the game, the ghost with the most of its favorite treats wins.   The game play is simple to learn (as someone who almost won the first time she played can attest), and the so-adorable-it's-scary art makes this game a joy. If you love candy and being the bad guy, too, head to your local game store or Warehouse 23 to add Ghosts Love Candy to your collection!

October 2, 2017: Triplanetary – For Real This Time

Mon, 10/02/2017 - 10:46
Triplanetary It's been well over 25 years since I said "we're planning to release this in 1991." What can I say? Right after that prediction went to print, the Secret Service happened. After we were back on our feet, GURPS 4e and Munchkin happened. Other things happened. Life happened, and life plays hob with planning.

But Triplanetary remains one of the best space games ever created, and I've never stopped thinking about it. We are now shooting for a late 2017 Kickstarter and an Origins 2018 release, which means that if all goes well, there's a trip to Origins in my own future.

One of the big things I have concluded, over many years of thinking, is that this game really shouldn't be messed with very much. There is absolutely nothing in the Constitution that requires a new publisher to make a lot of changes in a classic. I am not sure I even want to change the look of the counters very much. The map is going to get bigger, though!

If you are a Triplanetary fan – and I know there are still some of us out there – please get in contact. I'm using the forum as my primary feedback tool.

I have three main playtest needs:

First, I could use comments on some minor rule tweaks. In particular, I think torpedoes are too strong, and weakening them will remove some boring insta-kills from the game.

Second, those of you who like the shooting part of the game could look at an optional advanced combat system I've roughed out.

Third . . . if you have six or a dozen people around, or a convention coming up . . . try the new campaign game and tell me what you think.

October 1, 2017: Play For Puerto Rico

Sun, 10/01/2017 - 10:45
Play For Puerto Rico Our friends at Peachstate Hobby Distribution have started a GoFundMe campaign for the aid and support of Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

As you know, the United States has been ravaged by storms recently, with the last big one leaving large sections of Puerto Rico without power, food, and water. Sito Sanchez, president of PHD and born and raised in San Juan, started this charity drive to fund this disaster relief. Please consider donating; the funds are going to United for Puerto Rico (Unidos por Puerto Rico) to help them rebuild and save lives.

If you can't donate, please share! Every little bit helps.

September 30, 2017: Call For Playtesters: GURPS Steampunk 2: Steam And Shellfire

Sat, 09/30/2017 - 10:44
Settings and Style We are seeking playtesters for GURPS Steampunk 2: Steam and Shellfire, by Phil Masters. This is a follow-up to GURPS Steampunk 1: Settings and Style, which itself builds off the classic GURPS Third Edition supplement GURPS Steampunk. Steampunk 2 deals with technology and equipment in steampunk worlds, whether historically realistic or highly fantastical. It covers information-processing devices, power sources, weapons, clothing, and assorted adventuring gear. Means of transport have already been covered by GURPS Vehicles: Steampunk Conveyances.

We are primarily seeking applicants with experience in or knowledge of real Steam Age technology and of steampunk fiction and fashion, or an enthusiastic interest in running steampunk games. Applicants should ideally be familiar with the GURPS Basic Set and the aforementioned GURPS Steampunk 1: Settings and Style, as well as GURPS Vehicles: Steampunk Conveyances and the Third Edition supplements GURPS Steampunk and GURPS Steam-Tech. However, fresh eyes may be useful, so please feel free to apply if you think you have something to contribute.

This supplement combines both "crunchy" game details and flavorful steampunk-genre elements, so we will be looking for comments on game mechanics as well as atmosphere and style. We expect the playtest to be very active for about three weeks, and then to remain open to hammer out details for as long as the author requires after the initial feedback period.

The playtest is currently scheduled to run from October 2 to October 23. We would ideally have all applications by October 1.

Preferential playtest slots will be given to those who have spent at least $50 on PDFs from Warehouse 23 in the past calendar year, though this is not a requirement. For more, see the general playtest information page.

Prospective playtesters should email Roger Burton West with [playtest] in the subject. Include your preferred email address for the closed playtest mailing list, your name as you wish it to appear in the published supplement, your Warehouse 23 login name, and a few words on why we should pick you: qualifications, experience, current gaming group(s), etc. Please submit in this format:

I'm a GM with 10 years' experience, and have been running GURPS campaigns for seven years; I have playtest credit on three previous supplements. I've been running a Steampunk game for the past six years. In my spare time, I tinker with steam-powered gizmos.

We look forward to hearing from you!
