March 17, 2018: Water Lilies

19 min 35 sec ago
When I'm not gaming, one of my hobbies is growing water lilies, and 2017 was a great summer for blooms. Here are some pictures to tide you and me over till it's summer again . . .

The purple lily is called Director Moore. It is my only "tropical" lily, meaning that it blooms very profusely (I have two plants, and between them I have three or four flowers almost every day in season). But it has to be protected from the cold, even more than other lilies. Director Moore also has a very strong scent.

The yellow ones in the bowl are Texas Dawn. I usually leave my lily blooms on the plants and enjoy them outside, but this time, I cut a couple. They vary from a light yellow through peach. This is my strongest-growing lily – a single plant would cover 9 or 10 feet in diameter, easily, if I had the space to allow it. It was hybridized here in Texas. It also makes the biggest blooms, and they have a very distinct scent.

The white one is Hal Miller. I have had this plant for more than 25 years and it just keeps on growing and blooming. It is one of the parents of Texas Dawn, which is why the bloom shape looks similar. The blooms are almost as big as Texas Dawn, but not as scented. Hal Miller was very popular at one time, and newer introductions have pushed it out of the limelight, but it's still a favorite of mine.

The little red ones – and they really are little – are Perry's Baby Red. I had despaired of finding a red lily that could handle Texas summers, and then I lucked onto this one. It's a miniature plant; the vessel I have it in is just a big – okay, really big – flowerpot. It's unusual for it to make three blooms at once, but it happens, and here's the pic to prove it.

The green hopping thing is not a frog, though I have plenty of those. It is a Differential Grasshopper more than 2 inches long. As you can see, he's nibbled on the leaf. All part of the circle of life . . .

March 16, 2018: Big News From GAMA Trade Show!

Fri, 03/16/2018 - 13:10
The SJ Games team has spent the week at the GAMA Trade Show in Reno, showing off our new and upcoming releases to retailers and distributors from around the country (and world)!

Our annual penthouse party was busier than ever, with around 200 attendees getting to play the Munchkin Collectible Card Game, many for the first time. Thanks to all the retailers and distributors who came up and gave it a try! We hope that having a chance to play in person will also help equip people to sell the game . . . plus many got a sweet swag bag with unique gear, like oversized Hero cards.

Phil's presentations were also bustling, and for good reason: we spilled the beans on tons of upcoming releases! Expect announcement articles soon, but some of the sneak peeks included:

  • Big news for the Munchkin CCG, including our Day of Wreckoning event-kit contents, news for Desolation of Blarg and Fashion Furious OP kits, and the first announcement of the next set, Grave Danger. We also previewed some new products, like the Introductory Set coming this summer and the Phat Pack coming later this year!
  • New Munchkin Fowl Play and Munchkin Side Quests offer lots of poultry jokes and alternate ways to win. Also coming up is the first numbered expansion in a while: Munchkin 9  Jurassic Snark! (Steve and John tell dino jokes!)
  • Munchkin: The Red Dragon Inn, a crossover with SlugFest Games that will produce a mini-expansion for Munchkin featuring characters and treasures from The Red Dragon Inn, and a two-player game for The Red Dragon Inn featuring Spyke and Flower!
  • The relaunch of The Fantasy Trip will start with miniboxed editions of the two combat games, Melee and Wizard, each retailing for $14.95!
  • The Ogre Battle Box will contain over 80 miniatures, rules, and a map!

[Image] [Image]

We'll share more details about these things (plus even more stuff) in the near future, so stay tuned.

GAMA Trade Show has been an amazing event, and we want to thank all of the organizers, the retailers, the distributors, the publishers, and all the staff at The Peppermill who made this the best GAMA yet. We can't wait for next year. In the meantime, let's make some amazing games!

March 15, 2018: Dr. Stephen Hawking

Thu, 03/15/2018 - 13:09
Dr. Stephen Hawking has died.

It seems impossible that anyone reading this might not know who Dr. Hawking is and what he has meant to the world of science over the last half century. The number and scope of his discoveries cannot adequately be summarized in this space, but his work revolutionized the fields of cosmology and astrophysics, among others. Dr. Hawking was also a highly skilled writer and spokesperson; A Brief History of Time is still considered a classic book about science, making highly abstruse concepts accessible, even entertaining. Dr. Hawking also has the rare distinction of portraying himself on an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Perhaps most astonishingly, he did all this while enduring the extreme degeneration caused by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called motor neuron disease. Dr. Hawking was diagnosed with ALS at age 21 and given two years to live. We're fortunate that this diagnosis was so very wrong. Stephen Hawking died Wednesday at age 76.

March 14, 2018: Stonemaier Stakeholder Report

Wed, 03/14/2018 - 13:08
If you have been following our Stakeholder Reports, you will find this very interesting. Stonemaier Games, publisher of (among others) Scythe and Charterstone, did a similar report for 2016. Now the majority stockholder, Jamey Stegmaier, has written and released their report for 2017. Our companies are very different – so different that it may not be meaningful to make a direct comparison. Which just goes to show that there's more than one way to run a successful game company. But the comparison is so interesting . . .

First, let's look at the differences:
• SJ Games has over 30 full-time employees plus a number of contractors. Stonemaier Games has one full-timer . . . Jamey himself, the majority shareholder. There are a couple of part-timers. Everything else is done on a contract basis. Jamey states elsewhere that he puts in 80-hour weeks and likes it, which would make him one heck of a productive employee. Still . . . wow.
• SJ Games grossed about $5.5 million, down from about $6 million for 2016. Stonemaier grossed $7.1 million, up from $3.5 million the previous year. I like their top line better than ours, and I like their trend better than ours, too. Well done, Jamey.
• SJ Games has dozens of games in its current catalog, averaging around $20 each. Stonemaier has five main games, averaging considerably higher (plus, of course, supplements). And Jamey suggests that perhaps he should raise his prices further, and if I were his adviser, I'd agree with him.
• Stonemaier didn't use Kickstarter in 2017 and doesn't plan to use it in 2018 (read his report for the reasons). We have been using it and plan to continue.

And the similarities:
• Both companies are creator-owned. And in both cases, the founders are still active in the business – Jamey runs his whole show, while I have stepped into full-time game writing and nitpicking, and Phil Reed is now our CEO. I suspect that is the only kind of company that is likely to issue stakeholder reports at all . . . because we feel like it and because we can. Others might like to, but the management of a more broadly held company might not feel safe in being completely upfront with its customers. But Jamey and I can both say (to ourselves!), "What are you going to do – fire me?" *
• Both companies are organized as Subchapter S corporations. As a non-CPA who is nevertheless an experienced small-business owner, I can say that, in my opinion, this is the best status for a one-owner or closely held publisher. If anything, the recent tax law changes make this more true than ever.
• Both companies are debt free.
• Both companies turned a profit last year. (And you will have noted that neither company said exactly how much of a profit. For me, at least, that crosses the line between "what I hope you can learn from my successes and failures," and "my own darn business.")

And my conclusion: "This is very interesting. I wish more companies would (or could) write reports like this. Jamey gave me a lot to think about. I am a fan of his operation!"

– Steve Jackson

* The third company I know of that does an annual report to its fans is Mongoose. Matthew Sprange has been writing it for years, and it's informative, though with fewer numbers than Jamey and I give.

March 13, 2018: Illuminating The Munchkin Collectible Card Game Quick-Start Rules

Wed, 03/14/2018 - 04:07
Munchkin CCG The Munchkin Collectible Card Game is at your local game store now! In our haste to bring this brand-new game to you, we sadly left out some information and have found some information a bit confusing in the quick-start rules in each starter set. To make sure each game you play is perfectly within the rules, as you prepare for events at your FLGS and regional and national tournaments, we have clarified them below!

1) Mischief cards can be played by both players on any turn . . . but only between the end of the Unzap step and the start of the cooldown phase.

2) All Weapons committed to the fight deal damage to the Monster. If the Monster survives, then the damage the Monster would deal to the Hero is reduced by the combined defense values of all committed Weapons.

3) Players may mulligan after drawing their hand of cards. It doesn't make a difference which player, if any, decides to mulligan first. Once both players have had the chance to mulligan, you roll the die to determine who will be the first player.

We hope this information helps your Munchkin Collectible Card Game battles progress smoothly. If you have any rules questions, check out the Munchkin Collectible Card Game forum! And if you haven't gotten your starter set yet, what are you waiting for? Head to your local game store or get one at Warehouse 23!

March 11, 2018: Illuminated Site of the Week: 65 Million B.C. Was An Inside Job

Mon, 03/12/2018 - 01:06
The meteor that took out the dinosaurs might not have acted alone. Turns out, throwing a 10-kilometer chunk of rock at Earth does more than throw dust into the atmosphere; it unleashes all manner of cascading failures and Terran disasters. Phil Plait uses his Bad Astronomy blog to correct as much of the misinformation hurtling toward us as he can, which is a cosmic task given how quick folks are to believe the sensational. To be fair, he's also working against hundreds (if not thousands) of years of supposition, and he's only been around one human lifetime. If you don't want to read his work on what new things we've learned about our universe, you can peruse some of the older canards he's dealt with. Between the blog and the SyFy Wire feed, he's got most of the galaxy covered.

March 9, 2018: Munchkin Musings: March 2018

Fri, 03/09/2018 - 22:05
Red Pen Of Doom The biggest news of the last month was the overwhelming response to the release of the Munchkin Collectible Card Game. Thank you to everyone who attended a launch event, came to see us at Emerald City Comic Con (where we sold out halfway through the show!), or just talked about the game online. You've helped make this our biggest new game launch in years! You can visit for news and articles, or hit up the unofficial Facebook fan page, Zapped & Squished, to talk about the game with your fellow fans and whomever from the staff happens to stop by. Oh, and now we have a Discord channel (thanks to Hunter for setting that up).

We'll have lots more to say about the Collectible Card Game in the months to come, and I'm sure you'll start seeing previews of The Desolation of Blarg very shortly! We just sent Fashion Furious to print, so it's on track for an August release. Plus, Sam, Randy, and Devin have been working hard on the third expansion, due out late this year, and I'm very pleased to say that as of last week, it has a title . . . which I can't reveal just yet, even though I'm dying to.

Our end-of-January releases, Munchkin Magical Mess and Munchkin Clowns, have both sold very well - thank you to everyone who picked those up! One thing I don't think we stressed enough on Magical Mess: While it is a companion to Moop's Monster Mashup, it stands on its own; you don't need to mix it with anything to play. You certainly can, if you want to, but it's not necessary.

In February, we announced two new releases for later this year: Munchkin Cheats and Munchkin 9 - Jurassic Snark. Cheats is a lot of fun; we looked at all the ways we could let people "cheat" in Munchkin and wrote a bunch of cards around that theme . . . as well as a few cards to punish the players who cheat a lot. Jurassic Snark is Steve writing jokes about dinosaurs and John drawing them; how could it be anything BUT awesome?

We still have more announcements for things coming up later this year, and I expect quite a lot of secrets will be spilled at the GAMA Trade Show later this month, so keep an eye on our social media and the Daily Illuminator for all of those announcements.

Finally, don't forget that the Kickstarter for Munchkin: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, from our pals at IDW, is running right now. If you haven't backed it, dude, you're missing out on the most radical Munchkin release so far!

March 8, 2018: Munchkin: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Is Live On Kickstarter!

Fri, 03/09/2018 - 01:05
Munchkin TMNT Cowabunga, dudes! Munchkin: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from IDW Games is out of the sewers and onto Kickstarter now!

This new game features the Turtles, their allies, and their enemies, with art from legendary artist and TMNT creator Kevin Eastman. Players take control of their favorite TMNT character to get to level 10, but Munchkin: TMNT adds a twist: Team-up powers! Each character gets a bonus for teaming up with other players to defeat baddies. But ultimately, only one player can get to the pizza place first, so you have to know when not to team up!

The Kickstarter campaign showcases a Deluxe edition complete with over 150 cards, a die, standies, a board, and even an extra character: Pigeon Pete! The Ultimate Deluxe features similar components, but has a duoshade tone and red bandanas on all of the Turtles (similar to the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle artwork by Kevin Eastman). Or, you can get both with the Cowabunga bundle, which features an exclusive Kevin Eastman art print and a reprint of TMNT #1. It's a pretty radical deal!

Retailers can also jump in with two different retailer levels for the Deluxe and Ultimate Deluxe editions.

The project funded in less than an hour, and IDW Games shares new surprises and content on the Kickstarter page all the time, so now's a great time to back. Keep an eye out for more shell-shocking previews!

March 6, 2018: Munchkin Collectible Card Game League At The GameBoard

Thu, 03/08/2018 - 10:04
Munchkin CCG at the GameBoard!Thank you to Lynn and Amy of The GameBoard in Sheboygan, WI, for all of their encouragement and support of the new Munchkin Collectible Card Game in their store. The GameBoard was kind enough to host one of our pre-release events earlier this year (report here), and now they're running a weekly league; gamers are getting together on Tuesdays at the store to compete against each other! The first league night was last week and was attended by players from 14 to 49, showing that age is no obstacle when it comes to bluffing and battering your opponents.

If you're in the Sheboygan area, please visit The GameBoard on Tuesdays and ask to join their Munchkin Collectible Card Game league. If you're not fortunate enough to be near the store, please check our game store finder to find the store closest to you . . . and then let your local store know that you would like to join a Munchkin Collectible Card Game league. A local league will give you and your friends a chance to compete regularly and show everyone how much you're enjoying the new game.

If your store is running a league – or draft events – please let us know! Post in our forums, comment on Facebook, send us a message through Twitter, or even send us an old-fashioned email. Thanks!

March 5, 2018: The Munchkin CCG Was A Hit At ECCC!

Thu, 03/08/2018 - 10:04
Emerald City Comic Con has come to a close, and as we return to Austin, it's time to reflect on what an awesome convention it was! We couldn't have planned a better event to celebrate the release of the Munchkin Collectible Card Game.

[Image] [Image]

Not only did we get to show tons of fans how to play, they showed their support by helping us sell out of all Munchkin CCG starter sets and booster packs by mid-Saturday. We tried to overestimate how much to bring, but we still couldn't make it the whole weekend. It's a good problem to have though; it means people enjoy it!

Fortunately we still had cards on hand for our signing, featuring four incredibly talented artists: Lar deSouza, Katie Cook, Shane White, and Mike Luckas. People lined up around the booth to get their loot signed, including their new Munchkin CCG cards, as well as some of our artists' awesome Munchkin promos! I may have snuck some of the signed swag back to the office, so keep an eye on our social media channels for some potential contests.

[Image] [Image]

Thanks so much to the fans who dropped by the booth and played a game with us, and to the staff at ECCC who were extremely helpful. And thanks to all of you who spent this weekend attending Munchkin CCG release events around the country! It was incredible seeing so many pictures from local game stores while we were teaching the game. It's going to be a fun 2018 convention season!

Next up: GAMA Trade Show. See you there!

March 4, 2018: Illuminated Site of the Week: Accept No Substitutes

Mon, 03/05/2018 - 01:01
Dr. M. Doreal has brought the truth and the light out in people. At least, that's what happens if you spot The Brotherhood of the White Temple half-a-yard (to start). He brought the 411 on theosophy, hermetic tradition, and the translation of the Emerald Tablet. Akin to the Philosopher's Stone and other noteworthy mystic items, the tablet contains information that has spurred the efforts of everyone from Isaac Newton to Aleister Crowley. So for your fifty bucks, you, too, might join their hallowed ranks (if they reject your application, you get your money back; otherwise, you have to keep up your dues).

But beware, imposters and wannabes, for only by hewing to the truth of Dr. Doreal's translation can one be assured of finding the true inner light. Odd assurance from a fellow whose first name is either Michael or Maurice, depending on whom you ask.

March 3, 2018: Inspirations Come . . .

Sat, 03/03/2018 - 13:00
from the darndest places. I'm at home today, catching up on chores and working on TFT. While sorting through old minis, I came across a little model of an obviously sorcerous mirror. And the next thing I know, I had written descriptions for six magical mirrors.

Sometimes it works like that. Cudgel your brain for inspiration and nothing will come out. Get away for a while, think random thoughts, but pay attention to what you're thinking - and voila!  Well, sometimes voila.

I'm also coming up with a lot of punny potential titles for cards in the next Munchkin CCG supplement. Sorry, can't give examples, because the theme has not been announced. So it's probably mean of me to mention it.

As partial apology, here's one of my magic mirrors. No stats yet, just effects. Assume it would be a very costly item, and the optimum size would be a couple of feet on a side. Bigger or smaller ones get really hard to make.

Trap Mirrors

These must be created as a pair, of identical appearance, and if one is broken, the other becomes an ordinary mirror.

When the mirrors are placed so that they reflect each other from no more than 10 feet apart, anyone reflected in both at once will vanish! Their frozen image will be visible in both mirrors, from any angle. No time passes for the victim.

Depending on the spell, a mirror trap may work just once, holding a victim until he is released – or it may take a new victim and release the old one each time someone new comes within its zone.

To release a mirror prisoner, you may either cover both mirrors at exactly the same time, so that they can "see" nothing at all, or smash them both at exactly the same time while they can "see" each other. The victim will reappear midway between the mirrors.

If the mirrors are taken away from each other, the victim's reflection will vanish, but will return if the mirrors can once again "see" each other.

If one mirror in the set is broken, and the other one is not broken at the same time or almost instantly afterward (GMs may choose to be merciful), then the prisoner is simply lost (again, unless the GM wants to introduce a rescue quest involving the highest of mirror magics).

Adventure idea: A party member is caught in the trap. His capture releases the previous victim, who is a very interesting person who can help the party or be helped by them. Probably both.

Perverse complication: Perhaps a right-handed person will come out of the mirror left-handed, and must go through again to be put, so to speak, to rights.

March 2, 2018: Break The Rules With Munchkin Cheats!

Fri, 03/02/2018 - 13:00
Munchkin Cheats If you like playing Munchkin, you probably love treasure and cheating. Hey, no judgment here! We love those things too, which is probably one of the reasons we keep coming up with more Munchkin flavors. In fact, we know you love cheating so much that we've given you an easier way to do it through Munchkin Cheats!

This 30-card expansion is made up of various Cheats and other Cheat-themed cards. You can shuffle these cards into your Munchkin game to put Treasure cards into play more often and make things more interesting for everyone at the table. And to add chaos to your game (don't worry, it's still possible) we also included Monsters and Curses that interact with Cheat cards!

Munchkin Cheats is illustrated by Lar deSouza, who previously worked with us on a Super Munchkin Guest Artist Edition and the Munchkin Collectible Card Game Orc Bard deck. This expansion uses the original Munchkin card backs, but you can use it with ANY Munchkin game. Simply slip on the Munchkin Doors and Treasures Cards Sleeves and you'll be set! All in all, this is a great expansion to your Munchkin games. Admit it – you love breaking the rules!

Munchkin Cheats will be available in June at your Friendly Local Game Store and online through Warehouse 23, so watch out for it to cheat the best!

There is now a web page for The Fantasy Trip, with a news column that even has a couple of entries in it. I'll update that from time to time, and add some new art when such exists. In the fullness of time, this will become a full-scale website for the game.

And look at the URL: Is that cool, or what?

February 26, 2018: No Kidding: Munchkin Clowns Is In Stores Now

Tue, 02/27/2018 - 06:56
Munchkin Clowns

Why do we love the circus? Is it the acrobats? The jugglers? Maybe the knife throwers? Of course not! Everyone knows that the best part of any circus is the CLOWNS! We love the mayhem that these painted-face wackos bring, so naturally we had to give you Munchkin Clowns!

Equal parts creepy and comical (well, more creepy to Hunter), clowns can reduce you to tears of laughter or fear. Plus, they'll make you smile . . . right before they throw a pie at your face. What could be more Munchkin than that?

You'll get 15 cards full of sinister clowns to defeat, curses to overcome, and armor to protect yourself with. This mini-expansion is illustrated by Len Peralta, who has done an amazing job bringing to life seriously eerie cards without losing any vibrancy. Take Poundfoolish, for example. She's all done up in pretty shades of pink and purple, but she's completely scary. Who knew that was even possible?

Munchkin Clowns is out now, so get in your clown car and drive to your friendly local game store for your own copy, or purchase it online at Warehouse 23. And if your friends are scared by these cards and want to quit the game, tell them to learn to take a joke!
